I like the impact karambit rather than the blade karambit.
Do a google search on “travel wrench”.

That was my knowledge so far. Thanks for the real world experience.
Still, it strikes me as asinine (or even assassin) the miriad of knife instructors out there that tout knife disarms as something one would try and life afterwards.
Perhaps, in that case that you are unarmed AND cornered without any exit, well, do what you must to end the fight…
Pmarc,
no worries.
I get frustrated w/ all the bravo sierra as well & there is plenty out there.
while the disarm drills/knowledge/techniques are important & a vital component of the “abecedario”, consider yourself lucky if you get a real time disarm.
What experienced Knife practioners do is switch blade hands & redirect their attack. That is the problem w/ relying on grapping/traps/joint cranks etc. w/o immobilizing both hands/arms/limbs until the threat is resolved.
Whether it is Sayoc/Kier/Innosanto/Dieter/de Thouars/Villabrille /Lacoste/Illustrisimo/Sulite/Lameco/Dolce Pares et alia…
HTH…
Gorgeous Kandahar you have there.
Would it be fair to say (in your experience) that a karambit’s limited use would fall to weapon retention (IE weakhand pocket to counter a gun grab)?
Thank you.
Yes, absolutely applicable there.
But then so are many other things.
It has more applications than that, BUT what is marketing hype & farse is it’s ability in a real knife fight.
Way over rated and out of it’s lane in reality.
HTH…
I only trained with Sayoc/Kier once, but Tom was very very clear that snatching a blade out of the air was a fantasy.
He explained it was important to understand the mechanics, but the only way youd ever get to the disarm was if you managed to first control the limb and was able to work up to it.
I own one and it’s been sitting in my dresser drawer since about a week after I got it. I’ve owned an Emerson and now have a 5-11 Tactical ( i believe).
They lack general utility that I’d expect from a knife I’m going to be carrying. Not great for every day tasks, people are leery of the way they look and they don’t do anything a regular pocketknife wouldn’t do. For the size of the handle you get crap for blade length.
As for it’s role in self defense… you heard it from the man himself so there you go.
Spyderco Military of Manix is my shameless plug. The manix is bombproof and the Military is a wicked cutter and can give you impressive range for a folder.
Moral of the story. Karambits are a waste of time and money.
I have a Cold Steel machete, for opening boxes and general utility it’s WAY too big.
Compared to my Benchmade folder it’s a pain in the ass to EDC.
I get weird looks when I bring it with me to the mall or restaurants or even when I get out of my car at gas stations. I had some guy freak out when I went to get some money out of the ATM the other day.
The blade length is great but because of the size it does get heavy after a while and I worry about what an overzealous prosecutor might do if I hacked off some bad guy’s arm in a self defense situation.
Bottom line: machetes are a waste of time and money- carry a folder!
