As you can tell from my many inquisitive threads I am new to the world of AR. I’ve done a bit of research and asked many questions on here and bought a lot of kit accordingly. Now that this part is over and done with, I want some opinions…I ended up with a Knight’s Armament Co. M4 RAS kit (full kit with 9 piece rail cover set, vertical for grip and carrying bag). I got a very good deal on it…MSRP was $325 and I paid less than half brand new in the box. I finally settled for this for 2 main reasons. 1) I know KAC is top quality and 2) The price was right!
So here’s my question: How do all of the experienced shooters here compare the KAC m4 RAS to the Daniel Defense, Midwest Industries 2 piece quad rails, etc?
I have the KAC M4 RAS on my service rifle, and also on my 6920. I love it, never thought twice about my decision. It seems a little heavier than the other offerings, but that’s not based on anything than a feeling. I have one of the older ones that uses a hex screw for the clamp arm instead of the newer ones that utilize a flathead screw. Kind of wish I had the one with screw, seems like it’d be more secure. I don’t know why I feel that way as the one I have is rock solid and have never had a problem with it even though I put my 6920 through hell on regular basis.
If KAC made a URX rail for pistons or produced their own piston rifle, I’d shit my pants on the spot and proceed to completely empty my bank account regardless of spousal anger, and/or debt.
Or for the non spec ops, dev group, sog, red cell, lrp, recon commandos, they make good stuff:D. As do Daniel Defense, and Larue Etc. They are all a bout equal in my opinion.
Sorry a little tired with the “teir one” term, it’s the new “tactical.”
I just think it gets a bit over used on this site. I understand its’ intent (to identify quality gear), I just think people like to throw it around like the term “tactical.” My opinion only, and was not trying to be an A hole.
bkb0000 brings up a good point in this thread that it’s not uncommon to find real KAC RAS’s for around $150-$200. So the whole “if it sounds to good to be true, then it probably is” thing doesn’t always apply.
You know what, this is going to sound off the wall, but if people are building scam rip offs of something, usually the product they’re trying to rip off is pretty good quality.
For example,
Oakley’s, Rolex’s, etc.
Just an observation.
That being said, I’ve heard nothing but good things about KAC.
If I could afford one, I’d buy an SR-15 E3 without hesitation (I shoot long arms left handed), as for rails… the AR I’m building right now isn’t going to have any, as I don’t see much value in them for my usages. (I know free floating the barrel increases accuracy, the holes drilled in promote quicker cooling, and the picatinny rails can attach just about every conceivable firearm accessory, I just don’t think I need one for this carbine.)
But I’ve heard nothing but good things, Daniel Defense is good, as is Larue Tactical, between those three Vendors, I don’t think you can go wrong with a rail.
I’ve never owned a RAS, but I can testify to the quality of a few of the others.
The LaRue is very nice (I had a Stealth Sniper upper that came with LaRue’s rail system, but it was pretty damn heavy - part of that was the med-contour barrel, but a good part of it was the rail system).
The DD Lite is a good choice, but it barely fits over a clamp-style gas-block - I had to change out the screws on my VLTOR clamp-style gas block and file the top of one of them down a little to get it to clear the DD Lite 10.5" rail (mid-length gas system).
I’ve got a DD Omega on one of my rifles and it appears to be well built (but as has been said, very skinny). Mine is on a carbine with an FSB, so I probably don’t even need it in all honesty, but I’ve mounted a VFG to it and its definitely light weight.
I assume the RAS you got wasn’t free-floating - that would be my only issue with it but I don’t honestly think it would be a show-stopper if I had a good deal.
No, like I said, I understand the intent. I think in my display of personal feelings it just came out wrong, was not trying to poke fun. I just like to say “high quality” or something like that.
