KAC SR-15 upper on Vltor A5?

Anybody used this setup? I know the A5’s are designed to work with a wide range of configurations, but the SR-15 is unique so that’s why I’m asking.

I’m about to pull the trigger on a SR-15 upper but I need it to work with the VLTOR A5. I don’t forsee an issue but I want to see if anybody has done this. It is the newest SR-15 model so it should have a slightly larger gas port than the earlier models.

Mine works fine. Using the standard buffer that comes with it.

Mine also works. XM193 runs perfect, just wont really cycle steel ammo for me.

Mine, with the lightest (5.3 oz.) A-5 buffer wouldn’t reliably cycle Brown Bear, so I took it off. I prefer to spend $6 a mag, not $9. YMMV, Yada, yada, yada.

I have 2 A5’s on KAC SR15 uppers and they work fine.

When you say steel ammo, what brand do you mean?

Mine runs on Hornady steel case but I don’t shoot any Wolf or other russian stuff.

Same, I tried Hornady 55gr, cycles no problem. Wolf and brown bear, no so hot.

PMC, Fiocchi, and XM193 all works fine.

I have another carbine length upper that I run strictly wolf. Can get them 169 out the door at gun shows which really saves aloooot for everyday mag dump.

Yeah, I ran two SR15’s with this set up since the A5 was first released until a couple months ago. One of my SR15’s was an earlier, small gas port model and it ran with everything, including steel cased Brown Bear and Wolf, though. Didn’t run that stuff too often.

I’m running it now on a 14.5" mid length and I replaced one tungsten weight with a steel weight since I didn’t have a carbine RE handy and it runs even better. I know 2 guys that did this with their SR15’s and the A5 and said they preferred it to the standard A5 buffer. Vltor was supposed to release a lighter buffer (1 tungsten, 3 steel) but I don’t think they have yet.

Mine runs fine with anything I feed it. No issues in about 3,000 rds running the A5 RE.

I have and SR-15 what is the benifit of running an A-5 buffer system

Throw a BattleComp (or TTB) on it with an A5, and you’ve spoiled yourself on shot to shot recovery.

I’ve only ran IMI brass ammo through mine set up as such, but boring reliability.

I just got my SR15 I bought from a member on the EE. It has a TTB, and the A5 so far it has been good… I have had some hiccups with it, but the gun is still not broken in yet as it has only 340 rds through it. I’m heading back to the range tues to put another three or four hundred through of. Other wise I may customize the buffer weight

I ran my SR-15 with the standard RE/buffer and an AAC Blackout shooting Brown Bear and I never had a single problem, even when it was very dirty. Then I went to an A-5 RE with the lightest buffer and a Battlecomp. It started choking after 200 rounds (starting clean and wet with Slip2000 EWL), failures to strip a round mainly, short stroking. I changed back to the original RE/buffer (it still has the Battlecomp on it). Even though I left it dirty and pretty dry, from when it was jamming with the A-5, it ran like a raped ape yesterday at 35 degrees F with the Brown Bear.

To be honest, I noticed very little difference in recoil between the A-5 and the stock KAC set-up, it already shoots super smooth stock with the BC. To me, it’s not worth $3 a magazine more to have to burn brass case ammo.

I also have an A-5 on my S&W 5.45 upper gun, with the 6 oz. buffer and it’s been running flawlessy for a long time, but that upper is overgassed with the commie surplus ammo.

IMHO, YMMV, My .02, Yada, yada, yada.

Just came back from the range… Brought the SR15 and my BCM 14.5 mid-length…I was shooting xm193, xm855, ae223 and a box of tula for the wussy ammo test…I brought the BCM so I could use the lower, and on one my friends who is new.to the AR world wanted to shoot a middy…

So I continued to have short stroking issues with the SR15 and A5 combo, it would also fail to go into battery fully…The SR15 was brand new when I got it and I put the A5 on it prior to shooting it, stoopid me… I swapped the SR15 upper over to the lower from the BCM rifle (standard RE and a H buffer standard spring) and the SR15 ran flawlessly… it ran even tula, which I normally don’t shoot because its too underpowered…

So I am going to return the gun to the KAC specs and I’m sure its going to run fine… My question is do I try and change the buffer weight so the A5 works so I keep the benni’s of that buffer system, or do I say eff it and just run it how I got it?

I’m heading back to the range thurs, we will see how things go

since were talking about the A-5 i just bought a DD M4 upper and wanted to know what buffer weight and spring would work best in the DD M4 upper considering every one talking say this thing works better than an H buffer

If you end up back at the same weight as an H or H2 buffer, is there any measurable advantage to the A-5 system? I don’t know, that’s why I am asking.

I now run a Noveske 14.5 mid length on a KAC SR15E3 lower with a Vltor A5 stock system.

Havn’t had a single issue thusfar and it continues to have a very healthy ejection even with steel case.

Necro post coming back from the dead… I’m strongly considering buying an SR-15 mod 2 upper if/when they become available, both in 16" and 11.5. Is anyone currently using an A5 with an SR-15 upper with success?

Yes. I run a 16 Legacy and 11.5 both with the standard A5 buffer.
