I just took a Job offer at Bolling AFB in D.C. $85K per year +bonus health care and 3 weeks paid vacation. We are working out a benefits package now but he told me do not think you will be at 85K per year because I want to grow your position to include more people. It is a progam manager position at DIA
They are also going to give my wife a Top Secret Clearence and then she can find a job in the area.
My severence package is $50K from the Air Force and the Air Force and the company are paying relocation. I have friends in D.C. but I can always use more. I start 1 Aug 2007.
Congrats! Don’t know what the jobs entails, but kind of think that $85k is a little low for DC. Most classified jobs in the Hampton Roads area (where I just came from) were in the $80 + range and the cost of living is much cheaper than DC.
All that really matters though is that you like the job and is something you want to do.
$85K is start off. The president wants to pay for my Program Management Certificate, polygraph, and he expects the position to pay upwards to $110K-$120K base in the next 2 years maybe more.
He said with the benefits they are giving me it will come to $100K per year.
My wife has a Masters in Homeland Security and works for a local DHS office so they are trying to get her her TS so she can get into some of the positions with their company or another they work with.
Good job man I just got a new job as well. It will get me a TS /SSBI. I feel fortunate considering a few months ago I was in a dead end job with no clearance and now I am GTG.
Thanks for the kudos and encouragement. It will be a change. Going from wearing the same BDUs everyday for 5 days to wearing a shirt/tie or a suit. I still want to join the reserves so I am looking at that now.
Dang I need to buy dress clothes now. And Ties. This is going to get expensive. I am glad I have 8 pairs of Dockers/Hagger slacks but they are not the GQ stuff.
I work in D.C. as well, for the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), more commonly just called “The World Bank”. I live in Lorton, VA, and commute in.
Have you lined up housing yet? Home prices in the Metro area suck.
VA or MD? VA has significantly better firearm laws than MD does.
I have not lined up housing yet. I have a realator that is helping me but trying to find something that is decent will be an issue. We want a real house so I was told I have to pay. I only have 20K saved up for a down payment so far but it is a start.
$85k is not bad for this area - factor in your wife’s salary and you’re in decent shape. housing does suck, and unlike say Florida where you could push out 20 or more miles and get a nice place and have a still decent commute, anything over 10 miles from your job in this area can become a 1 to 2 hour commute. You’re not obligated to live in DC, so obviously VA is the best choice if you’re a gun owner and wish to carry conceal in your “off-duty” life. Arlington and Alexandria are expensive. Figure high $400’s for a three bedroom condo, mid $500’s for a three bedroom townhouse. The market has cooled considerably so the same $500k can net you a pretty decent townhouse or even a single family if you’re willing to deal with the commute. Springfield may be an option, but traffic is a mess on I95 in the mornings and evenings. Arlington is probably your shortest commute if you decide to live in VA. Woodbridge and points further south (like Fredericksburg) have nice homes, but the commute sucks and you’ll likely have to join up with some sort of car/van pool for it to make sense. Points west like Reston, Herndon and out in Chantilly, Sterling, Leesburg and South Riding have decent prices going on new construction, but again…traffic. 495 is brutal mornings and evenings. It can be done though, and the area definitely has the best job opportunities for anyone with a S, TS, or TS/SCI clearance.
