Just got my new Colt LE6920 and have a couple questions

Hey guys, just got my first AR-15 today, like it says, a Colt LE6920. I love the gun, but just have a few questions. I’ve been hunting and have had guns for years, but the AR thing is new territory so bear with me…

  1. I noticed that no where on the gun does it actually say (LE6920). The lower reciever says, “M4 Carbine, Cal 5.56MM, LE ######”. After doing some searching, I gather that this is in fact the way Colt is releasing their LE6920’s but I just wanted to be sure

  2. I thought the parts are stamped with MPT (Magnetic Particle Test) or something similar to show that these are in fact Mil-spec parts. No? I can’t find any of those markings

  3. The gun arrived with an orange plastic plug keeping the bolt from engaging the barrel. In this position I was surprised that I could still move the safety switch from FIRE to SAFE and back…unless of course I damaged something but I doubt it since it moved quite easily. I read that there is an interlock between the trigger, safety switch and hammer. Can anyone explain this and how it could do that with the bolt in the half-open position?

  4. What do you guys recommned for a storage/carry case? My Colt just came in a cardboard box.

  5. What do you use for a tactical type sling?

To answer your questions:

  1. 6920 is the specific catalog number for the rifle with specific options/lack thereof. The lower receiver is essentially mass produced for all the commercial AR15’s it sells.

  2. There should be a stamp on the barrel showing the caliber, twist rate, manufacturer, and most likely that it was tested. If I am not mistaken, the stamp for a Colt barrel would look something like “C 5.56 1/7 MPT”. The stamp may be under the hand guards. It has been a while since I looked at a Colt barrel, so the actual wording may be different.

  3. The selector is functioning properly if it can be rotated when the hammer is in the down, or “cocked” position. As the bolt is not in battery but on the chamber block, the hammer should be “cocked” as in order to install the chamber block the bolt carrier had to be moved to the rear a decent amount of distance.

  4. Storage cases are pretty much up to the owner. If you are looking for a lockable type case, doskicil (sp?) makes an inexpensive option, or you can go with pelican for a little more $$. For just a bag to get it to the range, pretty much any soft side carbine case should work, provided the dimensions are appropriate for your rifle.

  5. I currently use the Magpul sling, when deployed I think I put a Spec-Ops sling on in place of the issued three point. Slings are a personal choice item, provided they meet your requirements.

So are you saying I do or don’t have a 6920? I gather from what you said that it’s based on the options I have so i’m assuming yes

There IS actually a marking after the Caliber and twist that looks like an M and P overlapping eachother. Myabe that’s it and they just did a crappy job of markng mine? Like you said, I thought it would say “MPT”.

Congrats on your new Colt. Were able to locate any ammo for it?

Thank you man. I found plenty of good 223 ammo, but only low-end 5.56 ammo.

I also noticed that the bag the gun came in wasn’t sealed. Some guys make a big deal of this…not sure why???

I believe if you go to Colt’s website and type in the serial # it will give you some info about your rifle. I did when I got mine and I am almost positive it said 6920 somewhere in the description.

Yes for Pete’s sake, you have a 6920. Unless yours came in a box with blue lettering, as if that’s the case you likely have an Olympic.

Order a Vickers (VCAS) sling. There is nothing better made as far as M4 slings go. Your bcg will also have the MPT marks as well.

FWIW, my 6920 barrel says “MP” on it, not “MPT”.

Changing the rollmark from LE6920 t0 M4 enabled it to be sold in CA. The LE6920 is on the ban list.

My barrels just say “1/7 MP” too.

  1. I use a Walmart special hard sided case. It’s too long, but that makes it easier to haul two guns in one case the to range. I bought a bunch of these cheapy cases for $20 years ago. I don’t care if it looks hokey. It works, and no one would ever suspect there is a decent gun in there.

  2. For the last three years I have been trying to find a sling that I like. I have a box of rejects that all came highly recommended. I’ve got a Magpul single point (MS3, I think?) that I’m favoring right now, and I’ve been playing with a Giles sling lately too, but my favorite so far is a plain adjustable strap. No frills. I attach one end to the front of the hand guard and the other to the QD point on my SOPMOD stock. This is by far the best I have found and it’s cheap too. According to my instructors, proper length is achieved by balancing your gun in one hand and adjusting the strap so you can just slide it under your bent elbow. This allows for “American” carry, with muzzle up, or “South African” carry with muzzle down. Going from slung and safe to on target is very quick with either of these styles with a little practice.

@ OP, go with a VCAS sling and don’t look back. QD attachments, metal hardware, padding, etc is all just a personal preference.

I use a Vickers VCAS padded with QD’s on each end. My sling search has ended (I had a box of about 6 slings at one point…they’re all gone now).

I also like the VCS, I recently picked up a Vtac Padded, I favor that a little more becuse it offers more adjustment, but either way I perfer padded.

If you don’t have a big budget the Victory sling from BlueForceGear is the same as the VCAS just trimmed down for cost. @ $35-40 vs $60-70

This thread is borderline silly. If you want to know post pics if you are in serious doubt. It doesn’t matter if it’s marked Ronald McDonalds Flying Circus. You have a Colt carbine and it’s a very carbine at that.

Spend some time reading the stickies here and other threads. Shit tons of info here.

If this is true ,then why does Colt bother making a CA version of the LE6920?

My barrel also says “MP” and not “MPT”. I had to look twice because the way it was stamped - the M and P overlap so the last vertical line of the M is the vertical for the P. It looks clean, just kind of strange.
