Guys, I was in a gun store this AM and saw an M&P40 for $390.00 out the door. It was an older gun serial number MRA78XX. Are their any issues with the older M&P’s in which they had to worked out? Are there any parts that need to be switched out…
The gun looks to have maybe 100 rounds shot through it. The finish appears to be a dull black older looking finish, which I don’t care for the price. 2 Mags, no extra back straps , no box. Trigger is not too bad.
Does anyone make straight eights or Warrens to improve the sights situation. I have their 9mm Pro and really like it. Hope the 40 feels nearly as good.
If it’s an older gun I’d avoid doing any significant level of dryfire without snap caps like AZooms. Purchase an extra striker and keep it on hand if possible. Other than that, no real major issues I know of.
Warren makes sights for the M&P as do several other makers out there. With the right sight tool you can install any of them relatively easily.
First, put Warren sights on it. They’re available and seem to be the most popular sight for the M&P.
Second, remove the slide and look at the frame in the area of the dust cover. See if it says “Rev N”. The other things I’d look at is the striker and mag release. I think S&W is on their forth revision of the striker as they try and solve the breaking issues. I still see people posting about them breaking on mp-pistol.com so there are plenty of older ones out there (and even some of the latest versions).
Check the mag release to make sure you have the newest one.
I would also feed it plenty of ammo including JHP and whatever brands you can get your hands on. I know S&W has advised people to shoot only quality US made ammo but I think that’s BS. It should eat everything you feed it.
Still for $390 I say you did good. If, by some chance, you do encounter an issue I know S&W will take care of you.
I believe the mag release issue was worked out by the time the MRxxxxx serials came out, but I could be wrong.
As for the striker, if you should decide to order a spare make sure it’s part 27977 you’re getting; that’s the latest revision. They’re bare stainless steel and have a different neck design meant to beef them up a little vs. earlier versions.
As for the frame, it likely won’t say “rev.” anywhere. What you’re looking for is inside the dustcover in front of the locking block; the newest revision I’m aware of has fifteen dots in a 5x3 configuration. My MRCxxxx-serial M&P9 fullsize is that revision.
I do not see a Rev N or any Rev. Nor do I see that on my 9mm? I looked at the internals compared to my 9, I could not see any differences, but again, I dont know what to look for. Would not know about striker or mag release, any pictures as guides? It does have a blue wire towards the front of the magwell by the spring. Just to left of the spring that controls the trigger I think.
It also has a yellow zig zag steel piece that sticks up where the “striker” might be if I knew what a sriker looked like?
The striker is located in the slide. Look for a little metal hook in a channel near the back of the slide; that’s the striker.
The locking block is the part that rotates when you move the takedown lever; what you’re looking for is a group of dots located in front of that inside the frame where the recoil spring normally resides.
