Just bought an AK47

So I just recently picked up a older Romanian AK47 the other day and took it out to shoot, and all I can say is WOW this gun is loads of fun. Now I don’t know much about the AK’s besides maint. And cleaning. The wood on it is very old and worn, and I would like to replace it. I have searched the web for some replacements but don’t want to buy generic parts and want quality parts. Where is a good starting point?

And I am looking to keep my AK as original as possible without using sights or modified parts, just change the wood parts out. Thanks guys for any responses.

Easiest would be to go to K-Var or something and just get some modern polymer furniture. Or did you specifically want wood? If so, you might check Apex, Desert Fox, Cope’s, or for a completely American touch, Ironwood.

I don’t mean this as a nitpick and only bring it up because it’s important for your question: you probably have a Romanian AKM, not an AK-47. The AKMs are stamped receiver, while AK-47s are milled from solid metal. The AKM and AK-47 use two different sets of furniture that are generally non-interchangeable. Both types are plentiful, however  AK-74s use AKM furniture, too, so if you see anything that says it’s for an AK-74 (like the Bulgarian set I linked to earlier) it’ll still fit.

Hope that helps!

I want to keep it wood and looking as original as possible, as for weather it is an AKM or AK47 I’m not sure, and didn’t know there was such a difference. I’ll have to look into that. Thank you very much for the info, and shooting me in the right direction. Ill check out those brands and see what I can come up with. Again, thank you for your input.

Here you go.

Just be careful, lots of crap grade “russian red” knockoffs out there. Make sure what you get is authentic. Most genuine sets have Russian manufacturers marks on the buttstock.

Older Romanian means it is probably a SAR-1 which is a AKM variant. I’m not sure if Romania ever even made a milled AK-47 variant, let alone a semi auto that was imported to the US.

I would head over to the ak forum and see what you can find. I posted that I was looking for some Romy G wood (with the forward PG) for my non Romy G AK. I got a beautifully finished set practically for free.

Awesome, i like the look for that new wood set, now the next step is to see what kind of variation i have. thanks everyone for the input.

Tacked threads are easy to miss but here is your AK reading…

Also here is the difference between milled and stamped AKs.

The milled receivers (top) have a rectangular box milled behind the handguard.

The stamped receivers (bottom) have an oblong dimple stamped above the magazine.

If you find you have neither then you actually have a later model WASR 10 AK.

Be careful, AK’s are addicting.

Yes they are very addicting. very fun to shoot. had the brother in law shoot on xmas and he was amazed

I do belive i have the WASR10 AK model. asked my local gun expert and he agree thank you for very helpfull info^^^

Congrats. I’d love to get an AK47 as well, I just want one that is classic but quality without spending too much money on it.

I feel the same way ^^^ got mine for 350 from LMS Defence. im going to keep it all original tho. look into one tons of fun

Wow, nice. The only ones I’ve seen that cheap are the ones imported from Century Arms I believe, and from what I’ve heard they are very hit or miss.

They are a blast and they tend to multiply quickly if your not carefull lol. As for stocks timbersmith and Ironwood make some nice replacements if you go US made enjoy!

Another option is to check out Ironwood Designs. Great guys to deal with and probably the nicest AK furniture you can get. Here’s a beach set they sent me for my Hungarian:

The wood on it is very old and worn,
If it were me I would leave it that way. Many people love the battlefield pickup look and some go to great lengths to make the wood on their AK’s look old and worn. Congrats on your AK neat guns and easy to get hooked on.
