Why? You’re paying them to cut a barrel & engrave a lower. What business is it of theirs the status of your form or even what you want engraved for that matter?
Y’all are scaring me. My corp name contains a letter… Some docs show it with a period and some don’t. …
dont know but i had to send copies of the submitted paper work with both
That is quite odd. I’d find a different engraver.
ETA: Who was the engraver?
local nfa dealer and rose action sports on cutting sbs barrel. rose did a fantastic job cutting and threading for choke tubes ,only charged 75.00 and had it back in 5 days. so i cant complain about the odd request for papers .
New to the NFA stuff so please forgive me for maybe a stupid question. If you’re building an SBR why would you cut the barrel before you have the stamp of the all might ATF? Seems like asking for trouble for no apparent reason. As for the engrave before the stamp. Why would an engraver even question it. You’re engraving a name and location on the thing. Is engraving a lower illegal without an SBR stamp?
As for the OP. I see it as a way to hedge your bets.
i’m trying to get it all done before stamp approval . imagine if you spend all the money for stamp and wait till after to mail off for engraving and ups send your package to purgatory never to be seen again?
This.
Tell them it’s “Nunya” and if they scoff… leave.
While this is wise it’s not normal for a gunsmith to ask for approved paperwork to cut a barrel. This is a VERY common task and they’re not violating any laws what-so-ever cutting a barrel down for you. The onus falls on you to have a registered SBR lower if you have a short barreled upper in your possession. If you do not then I would highly suggest you keep your new SBR upper in a buddy’s safe as owning a regular lower and short barreled upper denotes intention in the eyes of the ATF which is as bad as having it actually on the lower. I’ve kept numerous short barreled uppers on my safe for friends while they wait on paperwork so I’m sure you won’t have a problem finding someone local to do the same for you or maybe your dealer/gunsmith will even hold onto it for you in a personal safe or something.
Just look at how much BS is caused by the ATF. Grown men scared about the timing to engrave or not to engrave. It’s all horse shit. It’s time to end the ATF.
I’m not usually one to suffer from paranoia, but just think about that… 2 shops (engraver & barrel cutter) have pretty much every piece of info about you… Your name, your address, your ssn, then your schedule A detailing exactly how many and what specific NFA items you have located at said address.
No thank you!
I just send the lower off to be engraved while the paperwork is cooking at ATF and don’t worry about the dots. I sleep just fine.
I’m sure that there’s nothing wrong with the way you do it. It’s just unnecessary.
What is the point of this discussion and drama? Do it in whatever order you want. It’s your SBR, your paperwork, your problem. If it’s fu**ed up in the process, fix it.
Jer was your engraving for a trust?
I am a nitpicker. I thrive on details.
If there is a “dot” or “the” or an “a” in my FORM 1, I would want the exact identification on my engraved lower, until such time I am doing my own engraving. I would make every effort to make sure there are no discrepancies. Having said that, I really wouldn’t sweat it too much until such time I hear of a case (proven and documented, and first hand) where someone got into serious or even ANY trouble with ATF over such errors.
Of course that alone is no reason to be sloppy or careless with the effort but I really don’t believe it is as big a deal as we make it out to be.
People in this thread need to chill out with the bickering and the drama. If you cannot do that, don’t post. And don’t keep poking the bear, either.
Only warning some of you are going to get before summer vacations from this website begin.
I would normally follow your advice Jer. The sudden reappearance of the eForm 1 changed all of that though. I jumped on the opportunity to submit. I was waiting for form 1 to return for months. There were around 600 submissions the first day. That means around 350+/- (accounting for multiple submissions) people submitted requests. The request were probably spur of the moment like mine was since I was waiting to execute. There are probably a butt load of guys that haven’t engraved their info yet.
I’m not trying to be a smart ass. Has anyone asked an ATF person about the agency’s concern pertaining to engraving detail? I have had limited dealings with the ATF, but my few experiences were positive. They were helpful when I was in the process of moving a sub from one state to another. As a group, we are law abiding citizens with zero criminal history. This fact should mean a lot. Am I their fan boy? Definitely not.
Cool your jets Captain Happy. He wasn’t attacking you.
And you need to read the post where I told everyone to chill out, and to also go read your PM’s.
We are done here, since people seem to have issues with reading and following directions.
