Like him or hate him, I have to hand it too Jon, this was one of his best show intros yet… Yeah his crack at the end about the 2nd Amendment wasn’t good, but other than that, you have to love the hypocrisy.
Btw, when Stewart attempts to portray Beckle as denying the first amendment religious freedom clause (around 4 mins in) because Beckle says we shoud consider not allowing Muslim immigrants into our country for a period of time, that doesn’t follow. The Constitution applies to US citizens, does it not? They would be being denied before entry, and thus before the rights enumerated in it could be claimed as their own.
Also, we prevent people for entering for other reasons, so it’s really not somehow illegitimate, especially if that characteristic is demonstrably a problem.
So I think he’s trying to slip one past his audience there (among other places, like the anti 2nd amendment nonsense at the end).
And there are likely way more than one million muslims in the world who would be THRILLED to see the great satan destroyed.
So yeah, as much as I dislike FNC along with the other cable news channels, get over yourself.
I think the point he is trying to make there is that we would be forbidding people from coming here simply based on their religion, which is rather hypocritical considering we have complete religious freedom guaranteed by our Constitution. Further, its a religion that is already practiced here without issue.
I guess he missed the part of the Constitution that says Congress gets to set the immigration rules. Congress passed a law that says if you do things (listed in 313 of the Immigration Act 1952) for 5 years AFTER being naturalized as a citizen they can revoke your citizenship.
So basically he is going to bat for the anti-Constitution types with his stupid gun rants, and against those who actually realized you can revoke a naturalized citizens citizenship under the laws we already have in place, and have for more than 60 years.
Once the left realized the bombers weren’t white Tea Party members with NRA stickers on their car like they all but outright claimed for a week straight now its a pity party poor for the younger one, and you have them jumping up and down over Miranda rights when they don’t give a shit about any of our other rights unless it suits whatever perversion they want to talk about that day.
The Constitution is such a great idea envisioned by men of extraordinary insight into human nature - and the tendency of the state to expand its power.
What “bullshit mountain” doesn’t realize is that you loose fundamental rights always little by little. I can only point to this great article that shows how
it happenend in (once) Great Britain: http://guncite.com/journals/okslip.html
Its always the sacrifice of rights (often seemingly marginal or those of a minority) for safety- a deal the Founding Fathers already condemned as evil.
Freedom of religion is one of the basic tenets of our country. Lately it seems like freedom of religion, as long as it’s not Christianity, is protected.
What it goes to prove is that both left and right, conservative and liberal, Republican and Democrat, are ALL perfectly willing to ignore the Constitutionally-enumerated rights when it suits their agenda.
You don’t have complete religious freedom. Start sacrificing people in your ‘temple’ and see how far you get with that…Laws still apply to religion although there are basic exceptions and legal tenets which protect MOST religious practices.
I don’t find it necessary to turn a thread about Jon Stewart pointing out Fox’s hypocrisy into some stupid slap fight about Muslims.
We have no laws that forbid Muslims from worshipping. Our Constitution doesn’t allow it. It’s really that simple.
We allow Christians to worship despite the Bible saying that those who desecrate the sabbath must die, fortunetellers must be stoned, and children who curse their parents must die.
