John P of Active Self Protection has break in

He had a man come into his home while he and family were sleeping. That’s what he posted on his FB page with pics:

"Well, holy shit. Tonight was a trip. We legit, no shit had a burglar break into our house in the middle of the night. Story to follow.

1AM, I am dead asleep in my bedroom when I hear a commotion in the hallway. I hear my son (26) loudly holler at someone; he was up gaming with friends. I jump up and go to my bedroom door to see him standing with a large knife confronting someone ELSE in the upstairs who I don’t know. Guy says “my homeboy invited me in” and I holler “GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY HOUSE” and run back into my bedroom for my nightstand gun in the quick access safe. Make it back in a few seconds and he has run back out through my office (away from James) and out the door onto the front second story porch of the house in the first pic.

I didn’t follow him out there. I posted up in the hallway (it’s a big balcony actually that wraps around the house and rings the living room) and he jumped off the deck and took off. I watched him do that, and I didn’t chase him.

I did ask Laura to bring me some shorts as I realized I showed that burglar my balls, standing there naked as a jay bird. She was on the phone with 911. The dispatcher was professional and helpful.

Phoenix PD arrived maybe 6 or 7 minutes later. Helicopter was overhead for about 20 minutes. They had the family come out to them and they cleared the house and yard. No one there, no one on the property, no one in the neighbor’s yards. They were at the house for maybe 30 minutes.

He didn’t take anything that I could identify. He walked right by the $6-7000 camera setup and $2500 MacBook Pro on the desk in my office.

About 5 I heard the ghetto bird overhead AGAIN and thought man, it would be wild if that dumbass tried to burglarize someone else tonight. Sure enough, 20 minutes go by and I get a call from the responding officer to our house that they’ve caught a burglar in another yard maybe 1000 yards from my house and asked if my son and I would go do an identification drive with them to see if it’s the same guy. Sure.

So I got to ride in the back of a PPD Tahoe for a bit. It sucks. 0/10, do not recommend. At least I wasn’t in handcuffs.

Lo and behold, it was the same guy.

They don’t catch the smart ones.

I am frustrated that somehow I left the porch doors on the 2nd floor unlocked for him to get in. That will never happen again. Next time I would grab the shotgun with white light on it over the pistol to help me see better. But overall I am happy with my response, and grateful that while things weren’t perfect I did what I was trained to do and didn’t chase threats or get in non-mandatory gunfights by chasing. Grateful he was a burglar who ran at the sound of my voice. Glad I got to see PPD for 30 minutes and not the next 24+ because it ended in gunfire.

When PPD apprehended him, he was hiding in a bunch of yard debris and they pepper balled the hell out of him to get him to come out and surrender. When they drove me by he was still feeling the snot rockets and eye closure response to OC. So he was already regretting his life choices when I got to see him that second time.

Hell of a way to spend an evening."
