Saw an interesting show last night: Jerry Miculek was doing some exhibition shooting with M&P’s on the show Impossible Shots.
He had 6 M&P’s, each loaded with a full 17 rounds. He had them set up in these angled mounts with tables on each side of him so he could grab two at a time. Basically he’d grab 2, empty them into the target as fast as he could, step back and grab 2 more, and repeat.
He did an initial run with just 2 pistols. He finished that in just over 2 seconds, shooting off 34 rounds. He was able to empty all 6 pistols–102 total rounds–in about 10.4 seconds.
Is it gimmicky? Yeah, a little. But Jerry M. is the real deal. I still came away impressed with how fast that guy can work a trigger. Even more impressive was his accuracy, considering the speed he was firing at and the fact that he was shooting simultaneously with both hands. Also, the M&P came off looking pretty impressive, thanks to Jerry’s performance.
Having been squadded with Jerry at a major match I can tell you that his ability to shoot is even more impressive in person than it is on TV. You watch him burn down a stage and then when you go to paste his targets and the hits are nice tight pairs in the -0. For my money he is the best all around shooter in the world. Most people will tell you that Rob Leatham is better with a handgun, and I’d be hard pressed to disagree, but Jerry is a 5 time multi-gun national champion. All around I can’t think of anyone that is even close to Jerry.
How the hell do you even practice those revolver reloads? That is a truly amazing skill. Don’t think I could go that fast with my P7 using the squeeze cock release.
He is also a really nice guy, I met him at the SHOT Show a couple years ago when it was in Orlando. He was standing all alone at his little podium with nobody around him so I walked up and said hi. He signed a picture for me and we talked for a few minutes. I asked him about shooting double action and he told me not to stage the trigger, just pull straight through. If you stage, the trigger break won’t surprise you and you will anticipate recoil.
First met him in Michigan (though we’re both from South Louisiana). Showed up and shot like a wraith on crack. I handed him MY pistol and he shot it the same way. I tried HIS pistols and shot like a mutt. Tried HIS revolvers and looked like a fool.
It mattered not WHAT we gave him. He shot them ALL exceedingly well. He shot a stock revolver faster than I could shoot my semi-custom 1911… I suck. :o
