Let me re-phrase, “Spend $3k+ for a guaranteed to run 1911 from a manufacturer such as Wilson Combat, etc., or spend approx $800 and then spend another $500 to $2000 to get it to run reliable enough to be trusted for shtf situations, albeit it may only run on certain manufacturer’s magazines, only with certain ammo, etc.”.
Of course this thread is about 1911’s not being the pistol of choice for self defense any longer for many reasons…
1+ to this. I guess Im just lucky that my Springfield and Kimber all ran fine for under a grand.
IMO the issues with the 1911 are capacity and weight. I’ve never had one fail me, whether that was a Wilson or Springfield. They offer ease of accurate shooting (I found the 1911 to be the easiest to shoot well of all the guns I’ve owned) in a thin, concealable package.
All weapons systems, especially handguns, are compromises. Find the one that meets your needs with the fewest compromises and master it. Mastery being the ability to use it and care for it. It doesn’t need to be any more complicated than that.

What is a short period to You? See below, as not only have I had mine for no less then (7yrs.,Time) I’ve shot the heck out of her,(for me) it’s actually My Most Used/Shot side-arm!
I paid $850. for my SS Colt Commander in .45acp 7 to (I’d have to look at my records for an Exact date/time of ownership) to 9 years ago now,… I bet I’ve got easy, I mean easily 8,000+ rounds through her and other then cleanning,
I’m still running ALL the same Springs in her, I am just now noticing the barrel lug/link hole is getting alittle bigger then when new, that’s it… I have had nothing but GREAT Service with the side-arm!
I love my much higher priced 1911 but I am Not/Never going to be using it as My EDC, I enjoy babyin’ it and keeping it like New too much.

Your experience is simply different than mine. A nice, plain-Jane Colt typically runs fine and reliably right out of the box. $2000? LOL. Only if you think adding a french border is necessary for SHTF.
Really? $2,000 dollars to get a gun to run reliably?
What imaginary gunsmith price list are you looking at? I’m seeing 200 bucks max, at some of the best shops.

I carried a Springfield NM for years undercover. The Springfield had some custom work but I don’t know who did the work because I was the third owner. I took the Springfield to Gunsite and had no issues. For UC work I carried it a in the pants Bruce Nelson Summef Special. For tactical work I carried it in a Safariland tac rig, circa 1991. Back in my skinny days, lol, I could conceal it under a tank top. Later for UC work I carried a Colt light weight Officers Model…

With carrying a 5" 1911, you MUST spend money and get the RIGHT belt and holster. That holster will probably be old school leather as well. For some reason…the leather pancake styled rigs were the most comfortable.
Yes, it was heavy but I could hit with it and that was a huge reason I carried the beast.
i carry either a Kimber tactical custom2 HD or a Glock 21SF CCW.Maybe alittle uncomfortable but when you pull it out the accuracy is great with that sight radius
I think that people are confusing “carry ready” and “hard use”. A carry ready gun is generally reliable and accurate with most factory JHP ammunition and quality magazines. A hard use gun will maintain a more stringent accuracy and reliability requirement over a much higher volume of rounds and over more extreme conditions. One person mentioned putting 8,000 rounds through their carry ready gun. Take a look at the volume of rounds that went into the FBI’s 1911 trial and you see that guns like the TRP PRO, Wilson CQB, Nighthawk, etc. are built for a whole different level of use.
Don’t take my word for it, plenty of SME’s such as Vickers have been making this distinction for years.

I think people get real crazy over accuracy vs combat/defensive accuracy/reliability. Do I need to shoot a 2 1/2 group at 50 yards, nope. Do I need to put all my rounds into a head shot or under the 9 ring at 25 yards, yup. I was told way back in the day, it was the nut behind the butt. I guess that mean’t the shooter was first then improve the gun. I think these days people buy the 3000 dollar gun and can’t shoot worth shit.

Why the “not good for self-defense” myth stems from I have no clue. As a Big Army pistol it’s days have passed but I’m not living on the Khyber Pass so…

Not really sure what you were getting at, but a well built 1911 does not requie that accuracy and reliability be exclusive.
In my experience, the tight has no bearing on accuracy or reliability. Neither does loose.
A hard fit barrel and other parts do tend to make the 1911 more durable and better able to hold accuracy over a longer period of time than pistols that just feel tight where the barrel is fitted up at high points. Bill Wilson has argued a tighter 1911 is also more reliable as it does the same thing every time it’s fired. This of course means a not to tight fit like a Baer.
To those that own both: Does a commander size 1911 carry any better than a government size? All of my 1911s are full size, but I’ve been thinking of getting a commander for carry. My only concern is that the 3/4" difference in barrel and the same grip size won’t make a hill of beans difference in concealability. Does a bobtail help with concealment?
In my opinion only if it is a lightweight frame. The bobtail is nice.
The bobtail makes a huge difference if you are going to carry at 3-4 o’clock. Having said that, you can find plenty of high quality full size pistols with a bobtail that conceal almost as easily as a commander.
