I used to live in Fla…years ago (early 80’s) when Ft Myers built the “new” airport…(South Ft Myers) I was working out there as a pipefitter apprentice. We were working at the fuel depot near the start of the runway… Funny thing, A sinkhole appeared in the middle of the runway, right where the airplanes would first touchdown…It turns out that back in the 50’s, the Air Force wanted to build a base in the same area… They shitcanned the whole idea after the compaction tests came back…They were looking for ground that could support heavily loaded aircraft, and the test showed the ground in the area couldn’t do it…Fast forward 30yrs, They filled the hole in the runway in, compacted it said it was good, and repaved it… Just a heads up for those of you who may fly into Ft Myers…![]()
Off the subject but we used to take family vacations to Ft Myers every year in the late 70’s to the mid 80’s. The Terra Mar on Estero Blvd. Many good memories there.
Sorry… Back to the sink holes.

Certainly not trying to offend. I love spending time in Florida, we just couldn’t justify moving there. At the time the economy was poor there and there were too many downsides to justify palm trees and warm winters.
And yes, we do have some shitty weather too, like tornadoes. But, I’ll argue the crime point all day long. I’m in rural ish Nebraska, it’s pretty tame here. And boring. ![]()
Either way, these sinkholes are pretty freaky. They either seem to be getting much more frequent or the media is just reporting them more?
Sent the pic to a friend of my who is a PE in Structural Engineering, we used to work together. He was doing structural designs on my projects in the NE. He moved from NJ to FL in 2012.
He agrees with my assessment as to the cause. Also agrees that the reason for the increase is in this type of stuff happening is because construction is expanding into areas where previously no construction would happen due to unsuitable soils.
Having has two homes hit by sinkholes the I have to agree with your diagnosis
