Issues with SSA 55 gr Barnes RRLP (5.56 Frang) Load - AVOID LOT 8/15/11

Ouch. LOL.

Yup. If I buy a 1,000 rd. box, I’ll tear off the lot # from the box and tuck it into my ammo can with the ammo.

No neck tension on a 20 cal bullet in a .223 case.

I told Pappabear he has to buy a .204 now!! :stuck_out_tongue:

Can you post that info here?

Sure. Since I purchased individual boxes (vs. a whole case), I did not have lot #'s handy (I don’t think they’re on the boxes).

The two lots I purchased were identified as

SSA10075-55BARNES made on July 7, 2009.

and

SSA10075-55GREEN made August 15, 2011, with the word “INSPECTORI” also on the packaging.

I’m not sure what batch was having issues. It’s entirely possible the older batch was the culprit, but, then again, there was another shooter in my class who was having the same problems, and I don’t know if that was newer vintage stuff.

Does Wideners take any components back for return?

Not sure. I’ll probably find a local .204 shooter and give them a deal on the bullets.

edited.

Hmmm, that’s odd. Had issues with some of their 6.8 Speer TNT ammo and they were great. Replaced it all and covered all shipping. I have shot a lot of their ammo with great results and was surprised to see you guys have these issues at the class. It definitely seemed to be a pressure issue and I’m surprised to hear that SSA hasn’t stepped up and taken care of the issue.

Keep us posted Slut…

It was the the Aug 15th lot that was on the hot side, all other lots are fine. I am aware of your the problem you had and I thought the matter was resolver. If it has not been please email me direct: art@ssarmory.com and I will make sure things are made right.

It was a small lot which I believe all rounds have been account for.

I loaded my own with this same bullet. I called Barnes and they recommended me using 22-24 gr of H335, my powder of choice.

I used 23 and mine ran great. I was NOT using a can. Their recommendations were about 3 grains short of a standard 55gr FMJBT load with this powder.

Yep… those bullets are long as hell… they eat up a lot of case volume.

Art,

Thanks for the reply. My situation has not been resolved - I would point out my contact with SSA has been through Jeff.

I will follow up with you shortly.

The irony is killing me.

Keep us posted Slut. SSA has always been GTG in the past and like I told you at the class I’m sure they will take care of the situation.

I have found their heavier 5.56 rounds (69/77gr) to be some of the most accurate ammo available. They also load the 70gr Barnes

:D…

The real irony is I am a near-noob at reloading.

We ran RWS Copper Matrix 42gr. [RWSCM223] without any issues, but we probably only went through 100ish rounds each so it is a limited data set. We got it from ammunition to go http://www.ammunitiontogo.com/product_info.php/pName/20rds-223-rws-copper-matrix-ntf-42gr-frangible-ammo/manufacturers_id/79. I was running a mid-length gas system and my buddy was running a carbine, neither one was suppressed.

All except mine. Email on the way.

Anyone not having this issue resolved please email me direct at art@ssarmory.com. Aug 2011 loading are the ones that have issue’s and we will replace it at no charge.
