Issues with AAC 7.62 sdn6

I know of the wobble these cans/mounts have have but has anyone had or heard of the cans not staying tight once on? I’ve had mine since April, I don’t even think theres 1000 rounds through it yet, yet I’m able to unscrew it without depressing the quick release button? Anyone else seen this?

I’ve haven’t heard of this problem. If the can is screwed on properly, the latch should keep it from backing off, even if it isn’t rock solid.

I suggest you contact AAC, since they are the ones who can actually help you with their product.

Ironic, my SDN6 just developed this problem earlier today and I came on here wondering if anyone else was experiencing the same issue…

I’ve got 5 different 51T mounts, Brakeout, Brakeout 2.0, and Blackout, and experience the issue with all of the mounts.

I let a customer of mine take a look at my personal 300BLK with SDN6 and he was checking out the can. He gave the can a simple twist and off it came with no resistance, without depressing the latch.

Confused, I confirmed this with the rest of my mounts. I did some research and I’ve read where others have experienced the same issue, due too (supposedly) a small amount of can’s leaving with a bad heat treatment of the latch.

Silencertalk has a thread about the same issue. Some claim that the latch much be depressed when installing/removing the can to prevent this. Others claim nonsense and that they’ve personally had Mike Mers of AAC tell them it was unnecessary.

After taking a look at mine it seems I fit the profile, the two teeth on inside mounting surface of the can have worn down to the point they no longer fully engage the knurled part of the mount, causing it to not lock on.

My stamp was approved 21 OCT, and I’ve had the can in hand since about 30 OCT. Less than 500 rounds, but it gets removed and switched from rifle to rifle sometimes two or three times a day, 5 days a week.

I’ll be speaking with AAC this week, I’m less than hopeful considering we’re less than two months away from SHOT. Never had any experience with their warranty department, just a horrible time of year to expect to get anything done in a timely manner in the industry.

I have returned my 762SD for this exact reason. The design of the ratchet attachment is such that it will eventually wear out. AAC was great about the return & fixed it quickly. Since I’ve had it back I’ve made sure to depress the latch when putting the can on. The ratchet sound when installing the can is pretty cool, but it causes the ratchet teeth to eventually round off and allow the can to be unscrewed without depressing the latch.

I think I may be putting on a little lube on my AAC’s ratchet from now on. At a minimum, inspecting the ratchet teeth periodically.

I’ve been doing the same - a light film of Loctite anti-seize goes a long way.

I am waiting for one to clear, thank you for the heads up.

You are not the only one. :frowning:

What sort of turnaround time have those of you that have had the latch replaced seen?

Actually when I called this morning and told them I was emailed a return label. The entire phone call took about 5 minutes

I had this problem with an early production Mini4. What happens is some of the teeth on the latches don’t get heat treated properly and they round off. I contacted AAC and had my can back to me with a fixed latch and a new finish in less than 3 weeks. All shipping was on their dime.

I have a few SDN-6s… all are fine but I DO depress the latch to prevent any excess wear.

I agree that it might be a heat treating issue (case hardened or just oil quenched)… I do think the muzzle breaks (51T) are hardened (think, not know).

If both are hardened, neither should wear.

I don’t lube my SDN latch (due to my install/removal depression of the latch).

Just my approach/results

Depress the latch while you mount the can, releasing it only to engage the last few teeth and ensure lockup. I’ve taken a 51-tooth can off many, many times over 5 years without any issues.

Spoke with AAC customer service this morning.

The gentleman I spoke with said this is to be expected, as the latch has a wear cycle of 500 installations/removals?

I was quoted at least two weeks for replacement of the latch assembly, depending on the workload of warranty service.

I inquired about waiting until after rifle season has passed to send it in, as this is my only centerfire suppressor.

He stated that I needed to get in in before quickly so it could be turned around before SHOT.

After SHOT, there will be no RMA’s issued for several months until the facility is relocated to AL. So seems I’m not left with many options. Either now, or April-May of next year with a 4 month backlog.

This is the first i’ve heard of this 500 installs/removals rating, and for a suppressor touted as a multi caliber, multi gun setup, I have to say I’m less than impressed I was able to cause a failure in less than one month.

My overall opinion of the suppressor has been great up until this point. However, I will reserve final judgment until I’m through the warranty process and have another couple hundred installs/removals on the new latch.

Well that can is in the hands of UPS and should arrive Monday.

Does anybody who has had their latch replaced or has had a can sent back for a warranty issue with AAC care to share what the turn around time was?

I can’t remember exactly, but I want to say it was about 3 weeks door to door. Probably a year ago that I sent it in. No further issues so far. Smoked a 'yote with it last weekend and it was a joy.

Nice. I’m hoping it’s not a long process. Perhaps I just got a bad latch that wasn’t hardened properly. Guess we will know after I get it back and get some more use on it.
