I found some Tula ammo, 75 grain .223, and wanted to know if it is ok to shoot out of my Noveske Recon. Pro’s? Con’s? Thanks.
Buy a box or 2 first and see if it shoots fine. It’s not the most accurate ammo but it’s what I use to plink with.
You can, but should you? You can run leaded gasoline in a car also.
I mean you paid so much money to have a premium AR and to run that shoddy ammo in that barrel would be a shame. I mean-thats like running wolf 55g in a Centurion Arms MK12 barrel!
I would’t do it but that is why I have a BCM for training clasess, and a DD/custom for a range/wolf gun.
IMO any true quality gun should be able to eat any type of ammo, even the steel case. Nothing wrong with steel case. Heck I shoot steel case out of my ACR with no problems.
If you can’t afford XM193 or cheap US made commercial .223, then you can’t afford a Noveske.
XM193 or commercial .223 is the minimum acceptable ammo I use.
XM193 isn’t that much.
What if you have a customer service issue with this ammo? You can’t just call up some place in a 3rd world country and get service.
Not quite the same, try and run leaded fuels in a car with a catalytic converter and see what happens… Might as well put Quick-Creet in your tail pipe…
Though I agree, I don’t think I could bring myself to run steel case ammo in a Noveske. Just too nice of a rifle.
I run Wolf in my BM carbine and it works just fine, but I have no plans to ever run that stuff in the Noveske barreled SPR I am building.
Mine has run it with no problem.
for an SPR/precision build I can understand since youre going for precision, not optimal with steel case obviously. But for some fighting carbine thats less of an issue.
Ive shot several 10 rd groups right around MOA with the Hornady Training 75 grain load.
For the money its the best BTHP/OTM type load out there. Ammo to go has it for just over $400/1k.
The only thing about it is its pretty weak but it still shoots awesome, and half the price of brass cased ammo using the same bullet or similar.
Palmetto State Armory has Federal XM193 for 500rd/$150 http://www.palmettostatearmory.com/500.php
I just got a BCM LW middy from Grant and ran some Tula through it during a carbine match. I got multiple stuck cases, which needless to say was disappointing as I was hoping to be able to run the ultra-cheap ammo through it. Since we pretty much know the BCM upper isn’t the problem…
I’ve run some brown bear lacquered rounds (62 gr HP) through it for sighting it in with no problems, but that wasn’t anywhere near the sustained rate of fire of competition shooting.
I just ordered some Prvi brass case ammo to shoot “when it counts” (competition or home defense), and I’ll have to do more rapid firing to see if the brown bear is GTG.
If you’re okay with it then yes it is fine; I don’t see the reasoning in getting a top tier rifle and shooting poop ammo out of it (Would you buy a porsche and put 85 octane fuel in it? I wouldn’t). The few boxes of Tula I treid gave me constant problems; accuracy went to shit; I don’t like the stuff, and with Prvi Partizan M855 or Federal XM193 so cheap and much higher quality; why Tula?
The shitty Tula is $225.00 on average for 1,000 rounds, but…
You could get the same 1,000 rounds of VERY HIGH QUALITY stuff for just $75.00 more (or approx. .075 cent per round more)…
PPU M855 $299.00 for 1,000 rounds at aimsurplus:

Here is some really good match grade PPU as well for a nice bit more; these are the most accurate loads I have personally used; along with Black Hills match grade coming in second (Over three times as expensive as the PPU Match load):

I guess I see no reason to go super cheap with low quality ammo that could/will give you problems when you can go super cheap (just a bit more) with some fo the highest quality ammo.
I’d spend the extra .075 cents per round and get a great loading; YMMV.
Also search for British Radway (Radaway?) ammo; they have M855 & other load configurations for real cheap sometimes, and they make good ammo as well.
Shop around and Tula can be beaten easily.
golden tiger .223 is $180/1k at wideners. Dont get me wrong I have a good chunk or prvi M193 and other brass too for zeroing. I’ve shot a lot of steel case I cant remember the last time I got a stuck case.
I don’t know if there is any truth to this but I heard this over at sigarms556.com by a poster named ‘‘ullie’’ who is very well versed in firearms.
The powder Wolf/Tula uses is harder and more abrasive on the gasport than most other commercial .223 and will erode it faster? While this may be true, I’m wondering just how fast and does it happen in the life of the barrel?
Another note, I use a lot of PMC and PPU brass ammunition, I use the XM193 as well as M885 in my ARs all of them run perfectly, I tend to stay away from steel cased ammo in my ARs, but I do use them in my AKs.
Never had any time with the Golden tiger; how is the accuracy and what if any any problems have you observed whilst using it?
$180.00 per 1,000 is pretty dang cheap! These days…
I know it was silver bear this guy was running, but ask him.
I havent been to the range in a month or so but I did order a case of golden tiger from wideners. When I get the chance I’ll shoot some. I was under the impression that Golden Tiger, Brown Bear, Monarch were from the same manufacturers? I’ve shot a few hundred rounds Monarch steel case in my ACR with no problems.
If anyones wondering what uppers I shoot with this steel case stuff, its BCM uppers and an ACR if that counts
Cartridges designed with steel cases have more case taper.
Hornady only makes training ammo with steel cases.
I have never seen any barrel or rifle damaged by steel cased ammo, they may cause more wear on the extractor so inspect and replace as needed.
I have seen what it leaves in the chamber with a borescope. Clean the chamber often and well.
$0.02, shooting steel cased russian ammo in a Noveske is like filling up a Bugatti with brand-x 82 octane Regular gasoline.
While this is true, I don’t want to deal with all the auxiliary bullshit that goes with it, like extra cleaning and no customer service.
