Is there any real reason not to seat a bullet on the Ogive?

We know it’s not a good idea to seat a bullet so deep in a case as to cause excessive pressure.

However some cartridges such as the 6x45 will seat bullets that are not too deep in the case but have too high an ogive to fit into a magazine without seating the ogive slightly into the case mouth.

If the cartridge will feed reliably and there is enough neck tension to hold the bullet is there any real reason not to seat a bullet .025 of an inch past the ogive?

I posed this same question to Sierra bullets technical services and they stated that aside from aesthetics there isn’t.

So the bullet is seated so far in, that a portion of the case is unsupported by the bullet?

If I’m understanding correctly, it sounds possible to cause deformation of the unsupported portion of the case during chambering. I’d load up some dummy rounds and run them through the rifle, to see what the action of chambering does to the rounds. If there is deformation, it will likely impact accuracy negatively. This is on top of the possible pressure issues you mention.

Let us know what you end up doing. I’m curious.

Need a pic or an overall length and bullet used.

In a semi-automatic you would have the chance to catch the rim of the case on the feed ramp (although likely also in a manual action). If the ogive is beginning below the rim of the case mouth you’re probably having a large jump for the bullet between the case neck and the lands of the barrel which is non-conducive to precision downrange.

I’ve never seen someone do this actually. I’ve known about 6mm-223 for a while in addition to 7mm TCU but every loading I’ve seen for it is seated to at or below the beginning of the ogive. You want the ogive to be just at the lands ideally. It’s why we single-load 80 gr Bergers for 223 Rem in long distance shoots.

I think that’s the critical part of the statement right there. Enough neck tension for the firing cycle of a semi-auto is critical.

+1 on bullet setback issues

(Bumping this old one)

I’ve got 1200 75 gr AMAX in .223 to load. I think someone here said they had acceptable result seating this way so the round would be mag length.

I’m going to try some in the next week or two… If I put them in front of a load of H322, there’ll be plenty of room in the case for the load to work.

I have a friend who loads the 75 amax this way. It has always worked for him. His ar is an amalgamation of shitty parts and his load shoots just slightly above moa with this load.

There was also a thread in which a guy showed up to a precision carbine course with a similar load. The person who posted it said he had the best load of the class.

I have seen this done but would not do it myself. I will see if I can pull up the thread it had pics.

I have no experience with it and H322 but with varget it runs great out of my gun. Im using a PRI mag to get a 2.305 COL though. No experience with it at typical mag length as varget is hard enough to get under a regular 77.

There’s at least a half dozen easier to work with powders than Varget that will run just as well or better. LT-32, H322, and TAC off the top of my head. I bought a pound of AA2495 to try too…

Yes we’ve had this discussion before I’m a recovering vargetaholic lol. Ive got tac and 322 to try under it but I havent had much motivation to as I plan on ordering a 22x6.8 from black hole weaponry that smokes the 223 and still has great barrel life. I was only get shy of 2700 out of my 20" 223 and with a 24" the x6.8 will get 3200+ which is at least 400 fps faster than what a 223 would do with the same barrel length.

I still believe youll have better accuracy with a longer mag since the ogive is so long on the 75 amax. Where did you find 1200 of them? I stopped shooting that load because theyve been vaporware for the better part of a year now. Theyre one of my favorite bullets and have held off buying the 22x6.8 and building a 22 creedmoor bolt gun because I cant find them.

I don’t know. Pappabear dropped them off and they’re sitting under the bench. PM me if you want to buy some. I really don’t have a load for them.
