Is the Eotech G23 Magnifier worth it?

I have the Eotech 552 A.65 Holographic Sight on my AR and have the opportunity to add a G23 Magnifier at a pretty good deal. For those who have this setup together (Eotech 552 & G23 Magnifier) on one gun how do you like it? When magnifier is flipped to side does it add a noticeable weight to the side? Definitely like the look of it and Eotech speaks for itself so I guess im looking for some feedback from people who have one or maybe have used one before? Thanks for any help or suggestions…

I don’t have an Eotech 552, but a 516. It is an excellent optic and does not unbalance the rifle when flipped to the side. I would recommend it without reservation.

I have an Eotech G23.FTS. I use it as needed occasionally on different rifles with different optics, including three different Eotechs, a T-1, and an Aimpoint PRO. Works fine with all.

Two things to consider:

-the 552 appears to have on-off-brightness buttons on the rear of the optic. Getting to rear-mounted buttons is difficult or impossible when the magnifier is mounted. Side-mounted buttons make that a lot easier. In the course of a shooting day, I change my brightness levels a lot.

-Eotech announced a new magnifier at SHOT, the G33, available in April for $589. It reportedly has a wider field of view and 2.2 inch eye-relief, and according to Cheaper-than-Dirt, magnifies the target without magnifying the reticle (don’t know how they do that). It also has a diopter-adjustable eyepiece (the G23 isn’t adjustable), and an improved “slap-to-side” mount that is supposedly slicker than the A.R.MS. flip-to-side mount on the G23. It’s also more compact, needing only 3.9 inches of rail space.

I’m glad you mentioned the G33, I was about too. I’m waiting for that one.

Just curious that the maximum effective range would be with and without the magnifier in place?

Also if one was going to spend the money is there much difference between Aimpoint (PRO) and an EOTech?

According to an Eotech rep I ran into… the center dot on the reticule is 1/3 of a MOA. So when you magnify it 3x… it’s only a 1 MOA dot.

The human eye can’t differentiate between 1/3 and 1 MOA dots. At least according to the Eotech rep.

I’ve had great experience with the first gen magnifier so I would highly recommend it.

That’s just not correct at all…ALL EOtech models have a 65 MOA ring, with a 1 moa dot. I’m not 100% sure, but the EOtech rep you ran into shouldn’t probably be representing anything more complicated than Schwann’s delivery.

Its a 1 MOA dot without magnification. Its still a 1 MOA dot with magnification.

The reticle changes in proportion with the target. This is no different than how a first focal plane scope works.

Maximum range isn’t determined by magnification but by ballistics of the weapon.

Does anyone know if it magnify the red dot too?

Yes it does.

I am also awaiting the G33.
