is my lower trashed?

i was showing my son how to field strip my AR and he dry fired the lower with no upper on it. i looked the lower over very good and i don’t see any damage. is there anything i should look for after shooting it.

any advice would be much appreciated.

thanks,

Check your bolt catch though, it may be cracked.

There’s a reason why we don’t do that! But, if you can’t see any damage you are probably GTG. Live and learn.

i’ve always been told not to do that, but i’ve seen it done countless times by marines while cleaning m16’s with no ill effects

How many times? Hundreds? A thousand?

It probably didn’t hurt anything. You shouldn’t do it, but if it happens every now and then, it’s nothing to lose sleep over.

my fault for sure. my son is very good about not putting his finger on the trigger when he is not suppossed to. he told me it was different this time because the gun was apart. i told him that you never pull the trigger unless you are sure of what you are doing.

I’ve done it dozens of times w/ issue rifles before I knew any better. Never caused a problem, so once is no biggie. Definitely not something to make a habit of though!

No you wont damage it initially; it would take repeated blows to do some serious damage, hundreds of times. Hell I accidentally did that tonight while taking mine apart, whatever.

your lower is not trashed but just check the hammer for and type of damage cracks or any thing of that nature. If there nothing your good to go, As for the other comments im sure once or twice of doing it wont cause any problems but doing it over and over your proabley asking for trouble.

I saw someone do it and it snapped the bolt catch off. I like to put the safety one when I separate the upper and lower.

Probably worth it for the ‘lesson learned’ value for your son.

I too have seen it done countless times by service members who don’t realize it can be harmful.
