This technology has also been weaponized albeit on a smaller scale, but several used in tandem on the proper targets would have the same effect.

That’s the primary argument against a nuke generated EMP. If you’ve got a nuke, why not just level a city to begin with.
Agree 100%. Which is again, is why I think a flux compression generator lit off at some strategic location is the most likely EMP attack we face. No nukes or missiles required.
Definitely not tin foil at all. Why do you think they reopened Cheyenne mountain? Literally because of increased concern over an EMP attack and how vulnerable we are to such an attack.
How many Russian bombers are zipping near our airspace each day? How many subs do they have near our coasts?

Speaking to the debate of why not just nuke a city in lieu of EMP. After an EMP you could nuke every city and not worry about much of a counter attack; or you could just march on in and take them without destroying the slave work force and resources. That’s why.
I still think a cyber attack is more and more likely than an EMP or direct nuke strike. A coordinated cyber attack could be devastating.
Nuclear facilities are EMP hardened and we have enough nukes on boomers to completely wipe out the cities of any nation or even coalition of nations even if they directly hit every missile silo on US soil.
Any amount of EMP won’t stop a US retaliatory strike.
It is the electrical distribution they will go after, and maybe not with an EMP. Take away distribution, and generation is worthless. The power grid is exposed, especially transformers, and lines. They are just out in the open. We may not even know which country or any country is doing it as it may be ISIS or similar.

I think everyone has gotten it wrong. WE as Americans think in our terms, not theirs. Due to the government letting in such a large number of sandbox people in the country…let’s say that number is only 5000. Now, of those 5k, only 100 people are willing to go jihadi on us. Then lets say 10 of them are bomb builders. I’m talking pipe bombs nothing high tech. Of those 90 left, another 10 are distribution people who have managed to gather a few AK’s and have the cache of bombs. Now we are down to having 80 people left. That makes 40 pair of 2 man teams. Nothing is going to arouse suspicion from anyone being only a couple of guys driving thru the country side to see some of amerika.
If you spread the teams thru ameriKa after having mapped out where all the substations are at, I think you would be able to hit at least 2 each. If you target the ones in BFE who is going to be there ? I’m talking rural amerika here, nothing in the urban areas. The first round of stations are set to go at a specific time so you would be able to hit at least 40. You could actually coordinate this in a way to knock out some of the best areas, leaving the major target for last. The substations would burn down while the gov tries to figure out what hit them. The teams after having hit 2 stations travel back to the distributor waiting for the other teams to return also. As soon as everyone returns, each team decides which of 3 major targets are best given everyone can monitor LEO scanners radio traffic for the most part.
Now, what we forgot about was the 10 bomb makers in NYC. Everyone is running around the country side looking for who did what and forgotten about metro areas. With tears in there eyes…the statue of liberty comes into view from the powerboat they are riding on…laden down with RDX…
Nothing takes more than an IQ of 50 and all low tech, which continues to be there MO. No need for an emp or hitting the power stations.

What seems so ironic is that the gov tells us all the time about getting hit from within now days, not an outside attack. I don’t for a minute believe that they are letting in all those poor people for the sake of a better life. Never let a crisis go to waste !!

I think it’s fair to say that an EMP hit is probably the most likely large scale attack we could face. We’re not gonna get invaded, no one wants to go toe-to-toe in conventional warfare with us, anyone who launched even a chem or bio attack would get destroyed… so a couple of dude that can smuggle some nuclear material onto a plane… that’s not the craziest thing to be concerned about.
How many of our enemies have access to nuclear material these days? How many times have we publicly seen where our intel/ DOD agencies have had something slip through?
No-one is going to invade, the federal govt doesn’t have the numbers to implement large scale martial law, natural disasters and riots you can probable evac from… but the power going away instantly for months? That’ll kill off a HUGE percentage of the population in short order, and there is no running from it.

Strength of the EMP, dictates distance of the pulse. The closer you are to the initial pulse is a factor, the overload can cause literal frying of components, even with grounding. Shielding is huge, if you live in the Midwest, and a XX KT goes off in your atmosphere and your farm truck is in a steel barn with lightning rod, your chances of having a working vehicle are better than someone with the car in house garage. But, if it goes off above you, the pulse can still fry all circuits.
On a side note, most military equipment, vehicles and radios have not been EMP hardened. Most have been “waivered” while they were in development. This has been going on since the 80s, cost always dictates development. This was also one the reasons the Future Combat Systems Program was killed in 2010., Cost always wins out, and not to mention some of the crap just sucked.
EFI (electronic fuel injection) debuted in automobiles starting in 1984. If you have an automobile manufactured after that and or an older vehicle retro-fitted with modern electrical components it will go tango uniform after a EMP/CME attack/occurrence. The starter solenoid will also be fried.
Your best bet is to have a vehicle that runs on diesel with a mechanical injection pump.
With that said, if you are the only one with a working automobile for miles around you will become a target rather quickly.
Off the top of my head there are two films that deal with this scenario. In the 2005 version of War of the Worlds Tom Cruise plays a single dad who had a buddy of his put a new starter solenoid in a mini-van after the Martian invasion due to their EMPs. Once they arrive at another town with the only operating vehicle they are swarmed by a mob and dragged out of the van at gun point. The other is a movie called Dragon Day about a CHICOM invasion of CONUS. Rouge LEOs take by force a man’s older truck that is still up and running after all other vehicle are fried by a CHICOM EMP.
Truth is, there’s not a lot of data on the effects.
I remember somewhere in the 40’s/50’s a truck’s wiring harness actually burst into flames from being overloaded.
I pretty much consider vehicles a crapshoot in regards to EMP. My F150 is nothing more than a computer on wheels, so I’m rat-****ed.
Aside from solar CMEs we have to contend with man-made weaponized EMPs; NEMP (nuclear), HEMP (high altitude), and NNEMP (non-nuclear).
I don’t envy the poor bastards that have to have pacemakers . . .

Say one day your doing whatever it is that you do and suddenly without warning there is a power outage, then you notice your cell phone is dead along with everyone elses who is near you, your automobile won’t start, and when you go to look at your watch on your wrist you notice the hands have stopped moving . . . what would you do next?
We can assume that it might have been a massive CME/solar event as are magnetosphere is shrinking (aurora borealis anyone?) and our sun is very active or maybe it’s a primitive strike for an invasion.
Moose-Knuckle, interesting hypothethical; however it is incomplete. Too many factors left out, eg., where you are located at the time. That is probably the most important consideration.
Yeah, I know. Thats why I said “your doing whatever it is that you do”; work, school, at home, etc. Endless variables. I ask myself what I would do in any of them that I can think that I might find myself. So long as your not on a trans-ocean flight I think you got a good chance at circling the wagons and going to DEFCON 1 before the sheeple figure out what’s going on. I always told my wife if you find yourself in a situation where the powers out, cell is dead, and your wrist watch hast stopped, quietly get home as fast as you can without talking to anyone and play dumb as to what is going on. Once home it’s castle hardening and kit donning time.
Good point. I just hope I am not far from home. It would suck to be on vacation across the country, or even worse, out of the country.
