I am building my first AR upper and I need some help. I have always thought that you should use a chrome lined barrel. I have been told that chrome increases barrel life and protects against corrosion. One website I asked told me this.
“We don’t chrome line them because it’s a SS match bbl. Unless you’re shooting tens of thousands of rounds through it on full auto you get no benefit, and you actually lose quite a bit of accuracy.”
I am having a hard time finding a chrome lined barrel that isn’t $400. If anyone knows what would be best for a SHTF weapon and can handel what ever shit ammo I feed it, please let me know. I am very diligent about cleaning my weapons (I am a Marine after all), I just don’t want something that wont hold up.
$400.00 barrels? Noveske and WOA match grade can be had for less. It is hard to help you out when you don’t describe the barrel length, gas system (carbine, mid, or rifle) and the intended use of the weapon. How about fleshing out some details in that regard, as well as telling us where you’ve been shopping.

First AR upper - get a good hammer forged CL barrel (BCM BFH, Daniel Defense HF/CL, or the Centurion CHF) and you’re set. From all three of these, the completer uppers are also really well priced.
Whatever website you picked up that insightful ‘gem’ from, I’d stop taking AR related advice from.
If you want something that will tolerate crap ammo the best, it’s actually the DD barrels, especially for the cost. They’re MOA barrels at best (but 2MOA at worst with decent ammo), and under $300 for barrels.
The complete DD V5 (V5LW) or V7 uppers may go back on sale under $800 for complete units, and at that price they’re a bargain.
You have repeatedly said this about Noveske and supported Centurion barrels.
Have you ever conducted any comparative tests on a Noveske barrel? Have you even owned a Noveske barrel?
SME’s and Industry Professionals have repeatedly voiced their adoration of the brand and the barrels. Reputable sources have confirmed that the barrels exhibit exceptional accuracy.
My experience with Noveske barrels is that they’re top quality, but there are other options that perform similarly at a lower price point (e.g. DD HF barrels for hard use, BCM 410 for more accuracy oriented work).
To the OP: for a general purpose rifle, chrome lining is the standard. It tends not to be quite as accurate, but you can still get very good accuracy from a well-made chromed barrel, and durability and corrosion resistance is far better. You can get a Daniel Defense or Bravo Company chrome-lined barrel for well under the $400 price point.
The OP mentions SHTF and match barrel in the same post. He never discusses barrel type, length, etc. It appears that he is asking questions before he even knows what he wants to do with the rifle. The OP needs to access his needs, then re-frame his questions.
He didn’t say that there are barrels that provide similar performance and I never argued against that. He said that you are “paying for the name.” These are different things.
You posted 2 links to people praising Noveske stainless barrels for their accuracy. The op is asking about chrome lined barrels. There are many chrome lined barrels on par with Noveske chrome lined barrels that are much less money. If someone feels the need to spend $400 for the same barrel he could get from Centurion than that’s his prerogative.
OP, if this is your first AR and you want a “shtf” gun perhaps you should consider buying a complete rifle? Complete uppers of outstanding quality can be had for less than $500 if you still want have a hand in putting it together.
