What have these people done to help themselves since the quake? I hear all about how horrible the rest of the world is, yet I don’t hear about them rebuilding their own damn country. They can go back to eating mud cakes for all I care.
I’m tired of it too. Haven’t we given them hundreds of billions of dollars since the 90’s or before? What did they do with it?
What are they going to rebuild with? They have nothing.
The kind of ignorance these posts displays is understandable from people who have opportunity to make their lives better. Haitians don’t. You can’t possibly understand the plight of those poor bastards unless you’ve been there and seen it.
In the meantime, I’m sure that most Haitians would be distressed that the horror that is their lives is irritating you.
And who’s fault is that? Who’s done absolutely nothing to help themselves all these decades?
Like what? What could they have done to help themselves? Go get a job? Build a safe shelter? Grow their own food?
You have no clue about the culture of poverty.
We’ve given them aid, we’ve given them shelter, hell we’ve given them our ears to hear their problems. Yet they do nothing on their own. They never have, before the quake we delivered food and they where so damn lazy they wouldn’t distribute it. Instead they ate mud and starved.
They’re a nation of people who can’t survive on their own, simply because they refuse to. They feel entitled to hand outs.
Actually they could start rebuilding, they could grow their own food.
The Dominican Republic shares the same land, yet their quality of life is significantly higher. So the resources exist.
It doesn’t irritate me, I just want to know where the billions upon billions of dollars in aid has gone since the 1990’s. Or where the billions has gone since the earthquake. Haiti was a shithole before the earthquake, yet comparitively, the DR wasn’t. I’d also like to know where the M14s that Clinton gave them went too, but that’s another story.
Tragic to see such ignorance spoken out loud. You are judging the Haitian people based on half-baked conclusions you draw from watching watching CNN from your easy chair after a nice big meal. You judge them based on the way YOU think the way the world works. No clue. None at all. And even more tragic is that trying to educate you would be a total waste of time…just like this whole mean-spirited, ugly-American, ethnocentric thread. You should be ashamed of yourself. Even more tragic that you are not.
…he said, putting an exclamation point on his cluelessness.
So whats the solution then?
Isn’t it obvious? The solution is to talk about how horrible their lives are and call anyone who has given up on them mean-spirited while ignoring all facts and refusing to support ones arguments with any sort of evidence. That is the solution offered by all incorrect lines of thought.
You should try to educate yourself before you spew ignorant nonsense like this.
Specifically, look into the history of Haiti and our American contributions (if you could call them that). Haiti’s problems are a direct result of European colonialism and slave trading and American meddling.
So if American meddling is their problem we should just leave and forget they even exist?
They were decolonized a long time ago.
Slave trading has not existed for a long time.
Whats the solution?
Yep. They would be a lot better off right now if we’d never messed with them.
Sure, but the effects last for a LONG time. For example, the original inhabitants of Haiti were Taino indians. See any indians running around there now?
Leave them the hell alone.
Sounds good to me.
===========================
Just curious, what would that accomplish?
.
Boy, I sure wish I knew. Until the earthquake, I thought that the only solution would be some kind of multinational coalition that would literally suspend the country’s sovereignty and make it a ward of the world. But looking at the number of countries that have bailed on their announced commitment after the quake…it’s obvious that that was a naive hope.
They’re a country that MIGHT be able to govern themselves if they had resources, but they don’t. Virtually no arable land, no manufacturing, no tourism, no nothing except one corrupt government after another. I despair.
We’re almost 14 trillion in debt, have our military deployed around the world, and you want us taking over entire countries because they live in a shithole?
No, that’s not what I said.
But, in our hemisphere, less than 100 miles from where you vacation in luxury, is a country of 8 million people living in desperate poverty amidst disease and pain and hunger, and with absolutely no hope for their future that they can ever make it any better, and you want us to just abandon them as if they were just so much human garbage because the alternatives are inconvenient for you?
