Brendan Marrocco, age 26, lost both legs above the knees, his left arm below the elbow, and his right arm above the elbow when the vehicle he was driving was destroyed by an IED on Easter in 2009.
After undergoing a bilateral arm transplant at Johns Hopkins Hospital, he gave a press conference with his doctors today. http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/johns-hopkins-hospital-performs-double-arm-transplant-on-army-soldier/2013/01/28/d4b8e082-673c-11e2-93e1-475791032daf_story.html
I started to write something about whether I was more amazed by the young man’s spirit or the medical techniques/skills required to perform such an operation.
After watching Mr. Marracco smile and laugh at that press conference, speaking so candidly about his injuries, his recovery and rehab, and plans for the future, there is no doubt in my mind which is more amazing.
I am in awe of such courage and determination.
