I just switched internet services and now I have Wi-Fi in my home. I listen to several AM radio personalities, but some of the reception is crappy on AM. I want to be able to go to that host’s website and listen to their internet broadcast without having to turn my PC on.
Can I do that with an internet radio, and if so, how?
Do you recommend a certain radio to get this done?
I just want to make sure I can do this before I plunk down the money to order an internet radio.
I’m almost thinking the solution is to get a small, inexpensive laptop and just use it as a glorified radio–LOL.
Thanks.
(BTW: if you answer in jargon please translate into English). :jester:
An Internet radio is a computer. It has to be able to accept tcp/ip traffic.
if an Internet Radio is cheap, just buy one. Or a laptop as you mentioned, a Raspberry Pi, any old pc . Basically any way you get a computer and sound card hooked to the Internet ( your Wifi ) then you can get radio over IP.
You have to have…
A. Computer
B. Wifi connectivity to that computer
C. Software on that computer that understands how to play the radio content coming in over the Internet connection
D. D/A converter >> Speakers — changes the digital info to analog and plays it on the speakers
There are other ways to do it. You just skip step D basically and use Bluetooth to wireless speakers. All the info comes over Internet as usual then wirelessly again to speakers over bluetooth.
A really nice version of that is Sonos – http://www.sonos.com/en-us/home
So instead of one radio in one room, you can have radio anywhere that you place the wireless speaker/s.
