Intermediate length gas system

No, it’s a length between mid and rifle.
Perfect for an 18".

How much difference is there between intermediate and SR15 length? All I keep reading is “fraction of an inch”. Also is it ahead of or behind the SR15?

So how does a 16" intermediate compare to an 18" rifle system for smooth-idity?

Very similar, is the short answer.

Its very hard to compare gas systems just on length to barrel length. There are other factors, such as gas port size, buffer weight, spring, carrier weight etc.

To Joe, I can’t remember the exact number on the KAC gas system, but I think the SR15 is about .4" shorter than the Noveske/Vltor intermediate.

The Noveske/Vltor places the gas port 11.5" from the standing face of the receiver.

According to Wes from MSTN, the Noveske “intermediate” gas system is .4" longer (~11.5" from the gas port) than the KAC “intermediate” gas system (~11.1" from the gas port).

Here’s a useful image comparing the standard carbine, midlength, and rifle length gas tubes with the Noveske “intermediate” gas tube.

Rather than start a new thread I will keep it here. Does anyone know what size the 16" intermediate barrels gas port diameter is?

There is only one manufacturer that I know of who is doing an actual intermediate gas system on 16" barrels. They are Noveske barrels made for MSTN. They are fairly rare, so you might want to call them.

I wouldn’t rely on KAC’s port diameter since it’s their own proprietary design that is slightly longer (~.5" I believe).

The KAC tube is shorter.

KAC intermediate is between mid and rifle length I believe

If I remember right my intermediate 16" was 0.0937, but its been a few years since I’ve had my hands on one.

The KAC intermediate is about .40" shorter in length than the Vltor/Noveske/MSTN intermediate.

According to our gas port calculator,
.0X0 is a good size for 16" INT gas.

I contacted a manufacture about making a 16" 1/8 SS intermediate gassed barrel with a mid weight profile on 6-4 and they said they would throw one in production.Today I get a call and its ready to ship. I had the gas port drilled at .086" so that is where I’m going to start with barrel:)

Who may that manufacturer be? PM me if you don’t want to blast it to the world.

I shot my inter-mid rifle build today super soft with vltor a5 I used the 5.3oz buffer. Easily under 1 moa.The scope is a VXR 1.25-4 firedot not exactly a precision rifle optic.

This is not true. I designed one and it is now being produced by strong-side tactical.

I have one if the 16’s that Noveske did for MSTN in a dissapator set up.
Shoots and feels a lot like my KAC rifles.

Necro-thread, but hey guise!!!

I think I got the “last” of the JLZ / bore-coated barrels, which is identical to the one I got from Paul/Wes in 07/08, off by 1 serial number! Just built it into something. These barrels are still THE SHIT

What’s not broken, never needs fixing.

Although I think for suppressed use only, 16" would be closer to optimal with RLGS, with the exact same barrel. Not going to touch these though. My original MSTN, c.a. '03, Krieger 17" RLGS still shoots alright, considering its round count.

My next project is to see how short a “suppressed use only” barrel can go with an Intermediate gas system. I think it’ll be 13.5-14.2" or somewhere around there.

Good to see you post! Not like I’m keeping track but haven’t spotted you here in a while.
