I heard from a reliable source this weekend that HK was dropping the MP5, UMP, G36, G3, and G33 to concentrate on the 416 and getting U.S adoption. This individual stated that anyone owning a MP5 needed to get spare parts now as there might not be any in the near future. What are they doing? I guess they feel they need to spread propaganda full time instead of part time.
I dont think it is a rumor considering the decline in demand for MP5’s. The G3 was dropped awhile ago and the G36 is a flop in the USA. The 416 has a lot of momentum so it makes sense that they would want to put more resources into it.
It’s not realistic to think HK is going to keep legacy weapons in their catalog forever.
Somehow I don’t see H&K dropping support for several weapons systems that are in use by a number of military and police forces around the world so they can sell 416s in the United States.
I’m no H&K or firearms industry expert, but it seems to me that would be a really stupid move on their part if you are discussing completely dropping support for all those lines around the world.
Thus I would caution you to take the above rumor with a whopping great plate-full of salt.
I guess it was discussed at Knob Creek this past weekend. I wasn’t there so I don’t know.
Eh… I was under the impression HK sold all of their MP5 tooling years ago, and replaced it in their product line with the UMP??? ![]()
Hk dropped support for a number of platforms already.
Keep in mind Hk droped the .40 MP-5 a while back regardless of departmental need…
Several NATO countries have bought the Hk416 - either like Norway (the whole Army) or just for SOF. Streamlining their line makes financial sense.
I dont see how they could drop the G36 or UMP right now - but I’ve been wrong before.
Asked something similar from an HK Oberndorf staff member recently, no such plans. Atleast public ones.
Wouldn’t the new-ish MP7 personal defense weapon also play a role in their declining interest in their MP5 line?
MAYBE- they are planning for a big production run. So large they need to make these changes in their long term planning.
Pure Barbra Streisand.
And this rumor is almost if not completely verbatim copied from ARF.
The MP5 still sells, the UMP is their staple 9 mm SMG so that won’t be going anytime soon, the G3 has been discontinued years back after a 60 year run and the G36 is still being purchased by the Bundeswehr and Spanish Army. Sounds like horsecock to me, maybe this was regarding HK’s marketing efforts in the USA.
Seems that a civilian version of the Hk416, the MR223, was approved by German authorities now and will be featured on IWA. So streamlining makes even more sense.
Source?
I was willing to bet this rumor was told to the OP buy some idiot selling a box of MP5 parts at a 300% markup.
But now I’d give the “it came from TOS” angle a few points…
It’s dumb and it screws over their customer base, ergo, it’s probably true. Note: this posting based on my previous experiences with issue HKs and HK customer service, or rather the lack thereof. It has no actual basis in fact and is not based on any actual knowledge.
Oliver Schmider, Hk’s head of marketing/distribution Germany
And now there’s a page about it on the HK fan site…

Please don’t post this type of garbage on M4C.
Nobody cares what Larry Correia says or does, except for Larry Correia himself.
Enough said.
That article was quite funny!
Seriously, the thing I’m most interested in would be the 417. So I guess we’ll just have to see how this all plays out. I’m a bit jaded
at this point after all the years of ‘release rumours’ but it LOOKS like
we might be there finally.
One thing to consider: with the sheer ‘mythology’ surrounding the guns, sales will be high, which will cause other manufacturers to stand up and take notice. In other words, competition which is allways a good thing. And then when the dust settles we’ll see who’s system is better.
