Interesting Observation re: M4 ramps

Been shooting AR’s for 20+ years. Assembling, fixing, reloading, the whole nine yards. Bushy Armorer school, etc. I’ve shot American Eagle for most of this time. Great stuff! Last year, I couldn’t get AE fmj but was able to get AE 50g JHP (AE223G) at a slightly higher price. Socked some away and forgot about it. Started shooting it a couple months ago and learned A LOT! It’s a fairly open hollowpoint that wouldn’t feed in three different AR’s. Bullet hit lower part of ramp and stopped. My AR’s with M4 ramps fed perfectly. AK fed perfectly. Mini-14 fed perfectly. Bushy wouldn’t feed. USGI M16A1 wouldn’t feed. Cut M4 style ramps with dremel and round file, polished, PRESTO! M4 ramps really do serve a purpose if you’re not shooting fmj.

Just thought I’d share. Maybe help someone out.

I quit reloading when I found this ammo, it’s 1/2moa capable and was cheap. Makes good hunting ammo and works fine in my 3 guns, all with M4 feed ramps.

Does anybody know when M4 feedramps were first used?

What we now know as M4 ramps were first used in about 1993. Colt also used a shallower ramp then M4 ramps that went into the upper in the late 1980’s until about 1992. Just to make it all more interesting some late 80’s Carbines/Commando’s used standard rifle ramps.

Thanks, that answers some questions I’ve had.

I experienced a similar problem with HP Barnaul ammo awhile back; the hollow point tip is wider and flatter than FMJ and it was catching on the beginning of the barrel extension ramp. The extension ramp didn’t match exactly to the uper receiver’s ramp so I just blended the two together with a Dremel. While I was at it, I extended the ramps slightly to reach the mag’s front lip. Perfect feeds ever since on all types of ammo that I’ve used.
