Is there any requirement to report an in-state change of address to the ATF by a holder of NFA items? I see the form for interstate movement of NFA items. I did not see anything in the NFA guide that is linked to in the sticky topics above.
It’s been a while since I was a Title II/Class III owner, but as I recall, crossing state lines is a “permission” situation, requiring advance authorization in writing, whereas moving within a state is a “notification” situation, requiring you to update your record(s) within a reasonable amount of time following the move.
The moral of the story is that BATF records need to reflect the actual location where the weapon is being stored. While the Feds may or may not take notice of a specific jurisdictional violation, you also have to keep in mind that not every city/county in an otherwise Class III legal state is obligated to permit ownership. Just in case there is a point of confusion at some point down the road, it is always best to keep things up-front, up-to-date and as accurate as possible when dealing with NFA items.
you DO NOT have to inform them of a in state move. i did as a courtesey to keep things loking good. sent copies of all forms (15 or so) to a,t,f, in a registered letter and filed it.
