I’ve taken to telling people that if they aren’t going to carry with a round chambered that they shouldn’t bother carrying at all. All they really have at that point in a heated moment is a blunt object to club someone with.
High marks for bravery and intentions, tactically unsound decisions that almost cost him his life. Hopefully he makes a full recovery.
Good video and narration. It’s different than I initially understood.
Former cop with an unloaded gun runs toward the ongoing shooting. Gets shot and retreats. After he’s wounded and out of direct fire then attempts to chamber a round and fails. Relies on wife to get him away from scene.
Off duty cop engages. Shoots at bad guy from 5 yards. Misses.
Good Samaritan with suppressed 5.7 handgun and subsonic ammo shoots at bad guy (?? number of times) from a long distance apparently in the direction of crowded streets. Misses.
General public content to sit in their parked cars, both in line at the fast food place and on the street not moving, observing an ongoing shooting.
Several uniformed cops arrive attempting to find the bad guy while they (unconfirmed reports) shoot at other cops on the scene.
Bad guy ultimately takes his own life.
That covers it yes. You missed one, the lady who picks up the shooters gun. If she’d had the basic skills to clear a jam and some training, maybe she’d have made a difference. Some brave people with good intentions but apparently minimal training. I don’t want to armchair what they did, never been in a gun fight/two way range, myself, but take away for me is intentions without adequate training only get one so far. I have been lax over the past few years on the training side, I admit. We also know people respond differently under high stress and dynamic situations. The people in the vid commenting from their cars like it’s a f-ing video game reflect the state of society all too well. That I can say would not be me. No doubt, someone with far more knowledge/experience than I will give a full AAR. There’s endless learning to be had from that event, but will people learn anything?
What’s less than encouraging is that literally every category of armed response… former law enforcement, off duty law enforcement, uniformed law enforcement and good Samaritan all failed to shoot the bad guy. That’s not good no matter how ya slice it, regardless of hero status.
Not encouraging but very predictable.
Bizarre choice of firearms not withstanding, seems like a good guy. Gun guy vs idiot media asking Qs at least. The more I learned the less impact I think he had on the event and the shooter, but he still went toward gun fire and did what he could under the circumstances, which are confusing, dynamic, and dangerous. Interestingly, he had a malfunction, but had trained to deal with it, and did. Note how much of the event itself was controlled by malfunctions. The POS shooter obviously had no training to deal with a malfunction, nor did that brave women who picked up the shooters pistol:
"In this interview, we sit down with Jordan Salinas, the armed citizen who stepped in during the recent shooting at an In-N-Out in Idaho. Jordan walks us through the entire incident from his perspective—what he saw, the decisions he made in those critical moments, and how he ultimately helped bring the threat to an end.
We break down the timeline, Jordan’s mindset under extreme pressure, and what happened before, during, and after the shooting. This is his firsthand account of an ordinary day turning into a life-or-death situation in a matter of seconds—and the actions of a citizen who chose to intervene when lives were at risk."
He would have more likely made hits with a magnum revolver with a RDS in SA mode.
I’m kidding a little, but not entirely!
And he did help. The BG reacted as if hit, and may have been, by the first shot. Then, he pursued him, engaging the BG from 3 different places. That certainly had an effect on the BG.
If he did hit the BG with the first shot, it was a subsonic 5.7mm load from about 50 yds. So, that’s probably a 55gr FMJ at under 1100 fps, right? That’s probably going to penetrate similar to a 73 gr FMJ .32 or 95 gr .380 fired from a 4" barrel. That’s not good enough if it’s not an A Zone hit.
I don’t think he had an optic. A pistol with optic and 9x19 or up cartridge would have better as far as EDC weapons go.
I’m not big on carry optics. But if one is LEO or considering engaging BG’s focused on others rather than seeking cover yourself, you should EDC one. Or at least have one in your vehicle.
The best thing that could have happened was a Guy with a SBR and a Suppressor popped his cork in the Parking Lot.
