If Iām getting this right, James was the guy in the drive thru? James or who ever it was that came from further back in the drive thru line might get points for drawing fire? and he was apparently not a coward. Other than that, he also may have got the shooter to follow him back to where everyone was stuck in line and the whole not drawing his pistol out of concern cops might shoot him while simultaneously running toward the shooting in progress is bizarre.
And I guess that last one can be expanded to why go armed at all if the claimed main concern is getting shot by cops as they show up later and the person doing the shooting the cops would be responding to is some sort of a secondary? concern. Weird.
Especially because the dude youāre trying to shield the others from is ARMED!

Well, it took almost a week to get a clear picture of just what happened - but this video is pretty thorough. I had no idea that so much of the incident occurred away from the In-&-Out.
Given the multiple cameras involved here it no doubt took some time to review everything and edit this video into a clear timeline.
Interestingly enough, Salinas does not seem to appear in the video - he must have been out of the camera view. The video also suggests that Salinas was engaging about the time the shooter ran out to the road - which is pretty far range for a handgun. This could explain why he apparently scored no hits.
This is based on one viewing - I anticipate watching it again later with fresh eyes.
Kudos to the authorities for releasing a clear explanation of the event.
Watching that video it doesnāt look like a planned attack by the murderer. It looks like the guy for whatever reason just snapped- one minute he is ordering his food and the next he is murdering people. I guess we will never know the motive, though. Thankfully there were armed folks there to limit the massacre. People today just seem to come unhinged at the slightest provocation.

It gets much stranger. I have now read after being shot in the arm by the shooter he attempted to draw his weapon to engage, but could not because he didnāt have a rnd chambered and his arm didnāt function to chamber one.:
āOnce wounded, Mr. James said he drew his gun and tried to fire, but his gun was without a round in the chamber. He said he was trying to chamber a round when his wife and her friend ā both emergency room nurses ā found him and pulled him back to the car, where they began to treat his wounds.ā

Oh yeah I forgot that part to add to whatever is(or isnāt) making up his planning processes.
I think several news sources started out twisting the actions of the off duty cop inside(which appeared to be entirely logical resulting in the best possible outcome) with the drive thru former cop who seems to have had an odd plan ahead of time and, I guess, executed it in an odd manner.
A brave man. A dipshit when it comes to carrying a gun, though.
Might as well had a lucky rabbits foot.
Should have carried something long DAO / DA/SA or a revolver if safety was his issue.

A lot of people in SM dissing all the responders that had guns or fired back. How many have ever been in gunfights or been shot at? It should be looked at from a lessons learned standpoint instead of dumpin on the people who actually stood up and moved into the fight.

This is one of the reasons I wonāt carry a gun with a manual safety. Seen way too many experienced shooters stand up to the firing line, present gun, squeeze triggerā¦ nothingā¦ doh! safety engaged. And this is under ideal no-stress conditions. Things donāt get better under high-stress. Same with dicking around with an empty chamber only much worse.
Never been in a gun fight but want to eliminate the simple fuck-ups where I can.

Having an empty chamber and a loaded magazine should not be a hopeless situation as the slide can be pushed back to chamber a round one handed by placing the rear sight or optical sight on your belt, holster or heel of shoe or any available corner such as car wheel well, building corner, whatever is near.
Guess that is not taught universally in LEO world. Learned it in a pistol course in WV years ago. Demonstrated to death by Sage Dynamics in red dot evaluations.

Not immediately though. He fired back at everyone that got shots off at him.
Killed two and shot others after heād been shot at by two others.
The misses didnāt change much.
I have not seen a full time line report to make the determination. Iād thought he broke from shooting at randon unarmed people to focus on the guy shooting at him, and once LE showed up shortly after, ran off.
