Improved AK sights

I picked up a Krebs peep sight for my Romanian SAR-2 (5.45) and I am impressed. It is a huge $47 improvement over the standard notch sight.

While I wait to get an XS “Big Dot” front sight, I put a dab of White Out on the front sight and that made a big improvement too.

The Aimpoint is on here for “illustrative purposes” and I actually prefer the rifle with irons only.

Got mine at:

Nice sight for your ak, after looking at your pics I want one. I noticed you have the UTG pic rail on your rifle. Was it easy to install and how is the Quality, I have read mixed reviews about that rail and would like to hear more. Thanks.

I like the UTG quad rail and for 60 bucks you can’t beat it.

It is VERY important that you do not overtighten the UTG rail screws; otherwise it will bind your gas piston and cause some potentially nasty problems (like cracking the bolt carrier due to the resistance, as it did on mine at a LAV course). What you want to do is get it on the gun, put the screws in so that it is mounted, remove the screws, apply blue Loctite, and then adjust them so that they are “tight” but not too tight so as to bind the piston. You’ll have to move the carrier back and forth as you adjust. If it’s too tight you’ll feel resistance as the carrier moves into the final 1/2" or so.

After the Krebs upgrade I really question if you’d need a red dot (or rail) on the AK…

Here’s the other thing about a red dot, if you are using in low light. You will adjust the dot to a pretty low setting. As soon as your white light goes on, your red dot will be completely washed out and ineffective. So in that case, you’d probably want to run an Ultimak tube rail which (I believe) still allows you to use irons.

Just my $.02, YMMV.

I have that set up on my AK and its a lot better than the stock sights.

That looks a whole lot more robust than the Mojo rear sight.

I’m cheap, I was thinking of getting old beat up Ak sights, grinding the rear ears off flat, then welding a bushing on at the correct height and refinish–watcha think diy’ers?

Mark

Sounds like a whole lot of work.

Trick is, how cheap can you find the sights. It’s one of those things to try. The bushings would be cheap. I guess the sight should be ground to allow the bottom of the “ring” to be flush, fill it in with weld, smooth out and blue.

I guess it’s mainly a time thing.

I have used the Krebs and Mojo. I still use Krebs. Mojo was not impressive to me at all.

How stable would it be if you used just the UTG lower handguard? Would it work with an Ultimak?

From what I can see the UTG acts as a 2-piece clamp and therefore top and bottom must be used together.

If you don’t care about a 3, 6, or 9 o’clock rail positions, then the Ultimak would appear to be a good way to go.

Bhigear is out of Krebs sights and so is Brownells. I tried Cheaper than dirt and several other sights with out any success. Can anybody tell me of any other sights that carry it(Krebs),thanks.

i wouldn’t take it from cheaper than dirt for free…

lol, wow didnt see how old this thread was got linked from a more current thread.

Try useing a small file to open up the rear sight appature. Works great in getting a better sight picture.

What type of file? Pics?

I must admit that I’m disproportionately fond of the Fuller Mod rear sight. Such a simple modification and such an improvement in the sights.

I do a modification to my rear sights that is similar to the Fuller. I round the sharp edges of the rear sight leaf, and open up the notch with a round rat tooth file. I like it a lot better than stock.
I had XS Big Dot sights on my ROmanian, and pulled them off right away and sold 'em. They just werent for me. I think with a little more training they may have been ok, but that front was just too big for me. Didnt feel very precise.

The AK sights are fine the way they are. They’re combat sights not target sights. The only mod I’ve ever done is the Fuller mod. All of those other iron sights are a waste of your money. If you’re not comfortable using a file then buy a Fuller sight from Rifle Dynamics. Oh and before someone flames me I’ve been shooting AKs since the mid 1980s. I have shot over 20,000 rounds through one AK and have many high round count AKs. I’m not a beginner and I don’t shoot from a bench.
