I'm "retiring" 2 knives and need a new one poll.

I’ve decided to “retire” my 2 SOG Twitch knives, an XL and Twitch II. The reason? The Twitch II was a gift from my late brother, I’ve noticed that I’m not willing to use it like I did previously. I guess I’ve just come to realize that it means more to me than I thought.

The XL belonged to the same brother, he had left it on my counter the day before he died because he wanted me to sharpen it. I’ve used it and the II for EDC for the last 3 years. They’re not in mint condition by any means. The finish is intact on the hand scales but the blades are scratched. I’ve kept them sharp and oiled. I just don’t want to end up destroying or losing one.

I’ve been handling and looking at Spyderco knives and would like some opinions on a few models. The models that interest me are in the $50-$80 range, if I destroy or lose them I won’t be happy but it won’t hurt like losing a $400 knife.

  1. Spyderco Endura4 FRN, it gets good reviews and the size is on the upper end of what I find acceptable for work and EDC.

  2. Spyderco Centofante III, also gets good reviews and seems like it wouldn’t offend the sensibilities of the weekly manicure crowd (the grease and road grime under my nails would probably offend them more).

  3. Spyderco Pacific Salt, again, good reviews and about the same size of the Endura. No handle liners though, I don’t know how it would hold up over time although the blade is said to never rust.

I’m leaning towards the Endura to tell the truth. The strength, grip, and size are all pretty good and the price is in between the other two. I could even get it in a goofy color like blue so the customers that we deal with don’t find it so scary but I’ll likely go with grey or black though.

I’d like to hear from those that have experience with these three. How they’ve held up, how well they keep an edge, how long you have owned them, and any other info that you’d like to share.

As always, thanks for the help!

I’m not really familiar with spyderco but I’ve heard that its hard to go wrong from a lot of people. As far as edc the Ontario rat 1 is cheap but takes a great edge and is tough. I’ve got a Gerber instant and been pretty satisfied, locks good and holds a good edge. I know that’s not much help but I hope you’re happy with you’re new knife when ya get it

Not familiar with Spyerdco. That said, I am an Emerson man myself I EDC one, but recently picked up a Kershaw Emerson collaboration knife for my nephew. Forget the exact model, but it a 3.25 inch blade, feels good in hand, a bit heavy in my opinion, at least it feels heavy, but otherwise solid and I like the wave function.

Of those listed, the salt is nice for EDC as it’s a metal that simply won’t rust and is super lightweight.

Currently I carry the Paramilitary 2 and it’s awesome, but still a little large. I’m considering switching to the Delica which is similar to the Endura but a little smaller and lighter. I used to carry huge EDC folders and I’ve kept working my way down to where I want something that’s about 3" and 3oz in weight, not more than that.

I personally carry the Delica 4 (full flat ground). That being said, the Endura is the “big brother” to the Delica, so if you want a larger knife I would choose that.
I personally really like the Spyderco full flat ground blades.

Carry an Endura with the wave feature everyday and it does everything an EDC knife should do. The edge stays sharp for a long while before needing attention. If I ever break it or it wears out, I’d buy a duplicate in a heartbeat.

I am a fan of the Spyderco Native and it is in your price range.
The leaf shaped blade is great, it is offered in great steels, the lock is very strong, it light, and the size is right.

Great question not dissimilar to one I faced 6 months ago. I went off the deep end for me as I was a Hardcore everything Spyderco, Emerson, SOG, Benchmade, guy and bought a Boye folding boat knife. I did some research on the material Dendritic Cobalt and their motto on the website is simply “Extreme Cutting & No Rust”.

It’s been a perfect companion with essentially a microscopic sawtooth blade that cuts forever and rarely has to be cared for. It’s my cheapest knife I own and my favorite by far the perfect size, have no fear of losing it, cutting anything messy or known to dull blades and it doesn’t stand out at all to be stolen.

Any of the Spyderco’s would be good assuming it fits you needs, the Salt being my choice of yours due to the Steel involved.

I have reservations about using (mostly) cobalt for a tool I might use for food prep but maybe that is just me.

Anyone have any experience with Spyderco knives using ZDP-189 steel? I saw a couple yesterday while doing some last second shopping. The guy at the counter said it was the best but I have a severe distrust of LGS counter jockeys.

Edit- Never mind, I looked around and rust resistance isn’t very good. Oh well, I guess Ill stick with what I’m already looking at.

I did handle a Spyderco Stretch FRN with VG-10 steel and liked the way it felt. It goes above my top price I’d like to pay but only by $10-$15. The grip felt slightly better, more locked in than the Endura, although the Endura has way more traction than either of my Twitch folders which are super smooth. It’s my only gripe about the Twitch series. Anybody here have a Stretch? If so how has it held up?

I currently have a Stretch and Delica (had and sold an Endura).
The Stretch is a great knife. The blade length is between the Delica and Endura, it has a more belly than the Endura and has a slight choil for really choking up on the blade.
The handle in comfortable, but it is wide when folded because of the curvy handle and blade, so it sits a little big in your pocket.
