When I first started shooting the goal was to have only one good rifle (i don’t collect) so I opted for a 16" middy as a do all/general purpose rifle. I didn’t see a point in having multiple guns that rarely get shot but fast foward to the present and I am sending out a form 1 tomorrow for an SBR in the 12.5" variety. I’d still like to keep the middy as a backup/loaner but am thinking that an SPRish type would be more fun to have (shoot tiny groups). What would your two rifle combo be?
2 11.5’’ KAC SR-15 SBRs.
16-inch mid-length and an 11.5 inch SBR. IMHO 11.5 is the sweet spot for SBRs and there wasn’t enough difference between 12.5 and 16 to suit me. I wasn’t interested in any kind of SPR build. YMMV.
I had a 16-inch carbine too, but it got to the point where I never shot it and I gave it to my son.

If I could only keep two I would keep my DD 16" Recce and my LMT 10.5" SBR.

Quality 16" middie and 12.5".
A good quality 16" barrel will let you do anything you should be doing with 5.56.
I like 12.5s because they tend to run better, have slightly better terminal performance, and you can use longer handguards, and gaining 2" of handguard makes more difference than losing 2" of barrel.
I too would have a hard time finding fault in a brace of SR-15E3s … one standard 16" carbine, and one 11.5" SBR, if you please.

I’m tossing around the idea of a 20" flat top, full stocked, full railed, Nightforce rig right now. Yes. This piece, and a standard GI style M4 carbine.

The 14.5" LW middy from DD w/ 12FSPM rail (upper will be here 12/24!) and my MRP which currently has 16" piston and 10.5" barrels. I would just add a 16" or 18" stainless barrel for the MRP to cover the SPR type role.
I’d go with an M4gery and an M16A4 lookalike with a DD Omega rail setup and aTango Down bipod.
But why stop at two??
I’d go with a 16 inch DD light weight middy and a 12.5 inch from Monty at centurion arms.

I will take a Colt M4A1 w/ an M203 and my LMT 10.5" SBR.
A MK12 and MK 18 would cover just about every need in a 5.56 AR.
I’d be ok if I only had my SR-15 and SR-25…
All the others are spares/extras.
