If You Could Only Get One

I’ve been saving for a while, but with other expenses and the economy. It will be a while before I can get both. I’m trying to decide between the SCAR 16 and the SCAR 17. I do have 3 5.56 rifles already, but no SCARs. I’ve always wanted a 308 battle rifle but was scared off by expensive mags and ammo. Don’t forget to say why.

I’d get a 17 because I would rather have a battle rifle.

I say the 17 since you say you have always wanted a .308 battle rifle.

I say the 16. you can use the mags you already have, with it and ammo is cheaper and readily available. that right there was the deciding factor for me to get the 16>17. I’d like a 17 don’t get me wrong… but 1 mag will only get you so far ya know?

I don’t see the point of the 16 if they are making 5.56 conversion kits for the 17.

Definitely the 17, I love mine. With conversion kits coming in the future for 5.56 supposedly, there isn’t a good reason to buy a 16. Besides, if you already have an AR then why not get a .308? The 17 is very light (<8 lbs.) and the recoil is totally manageable. If you have the means, I highly suggest you acquire one

Mk17

It’s really hard to beat a top tier AR-15 in 5.56 in likely scenarios…SOCOM thought the exact same thing which is why they stopped ordering Mk16s from the initial 38,000 contract, and are now only ordering off the Mk17 contract to fill their 7.62 needs. There is a role for 5.56 rifles which the M4 has filled pretty well, and there is a role for 7.62 rifles in which competing platforms are outdated and the Mk17 has a measurable advantage over.

If they make commercially available Mk17 Common receiver kits with 5.56 & 7.62 barrels, then my vote is for the SCAR 17s.

As it stands now: 16s, because it fits in with my current logistical footprint (ammo, mags).

17! 7.62 is a lot of fun!

As far as logistics goes the 16 would be the wise choice, share mags and ammo. But if you do not have a MBR and can afford to feed it and train with the SCAR 17 then get it.

voted: 17

There will be a 5.56mm kit for the SCAR-17 in the future.

I would go with the MK17 . Because you want a 7.62 battle rifle .
I personally bought the MK16 but that was because I wanted a piston driven 5.56 and I was really attracted to the SCAR platform . With that said I am currently saving for a MK17 . he he he .

MK17, however, I would expect a 5.56 kit, SBR barrels for both calibers and spare parts.

That’s exactly what I want.

Since you have an AR15 a 5.56 SCAR will not give you an advantage. I would get the 17 in .308.

but ya also gotta realize, they still haven’t gotten their proprietary mag’s rolling off the line for civilian distribution yet. How long before they start doing that? then how long before they even get past the testing phases of the conversion kit before they issue it to the troops?? it’s gonna be a minute before we see more stuff from FN. just some food for thought.

Out of curiosity, does the SCAR 17 come with one mag or two? Are these mags available yet?

SCAR 17.
I see no reason to use anything other than ARs for 5.56.
If I didn’t live in the US or already own several ARs,my opinon might be a bit different.

The only real, tangible benefit to the SCAR over the AR is the logistic requirement and maintenance of the base platform, but given the absence of these parts from FN at the moment, the platform is suddenly less repairable than an AR.

I do like the 17 (I have put a few grand through one), but it will be at least a year before I will consider getting one to allow the parts support to mature. I might consider earlier than that if the parts are in place.

SCAR 17 in CQB form. If possible.

Otherwise I see no reason not to save the coin for an SR-25.

I too see no reason for anything other than an AR or M16 for 5.56.

that said, Im not sure I would buy the 17 either, but it has atleast a snowballs chance, the 16 does not.
