If you could change the NFA laws and make one category non-NFA, what would it be? I would probably pick suppressors because it would be so much easier to get one for each caliber and/or gun while other NFA items would probably be one-time purchases, if purchased at all.
Suppressors.
Tons of benefits for lawful gun owners.
I am torn between Suppressors and SBR’s. There is no logical reason why a shorter barrel requires a $200 tax stamp. Then again, neither does a suppressor… So both.
It’s tough to admit, but at this point its such a PITA to get either that if the stamp were simply a FET on the purchase, and the NICS check was enough, most buyers would be content.
Honestly, if I could pick only one, it would have to be suppressors. As much as I think both are completely asinine to require the stamp, suppressors and the general public are like oil and water thanks to Hollywood. John Q thinks that a can on the end of your M4 pretty much turns it into a silent killing machine thanks to every movie ever. If you could require every American (heck, every politician) to listen to a suppressed rifle round without earpro you MIGHT remove heads from some asses. There would still be people convinced that you’re pulling a fast one…
When you factor in pistol config the need for a “stamp for a stock” is an absolute joke, and I can actually see SBR rules changing with reasonable leadership (because as of today my state doesn’t allow them, but there’s a bill working to change that).
MG’s, because they’re the ones that are largely unobtainable for the average American. I understand anyone can, but how many people are able to pay over $4,000 for a stamped pistol caliber SMG (MAC-11)?
Once that number goes over $10,000, I believe that the market is even smaller.
Suppressors should be in the AoW category, if nothing else for the carryover improvements made on the military side. Same with some of the inane rules on repairs - as long as the core/baffles aren’t drastically changed, why can’t one update the mounting and have some spare/replacement hardware elsewhere?
I went with SBRs, mostly because my fiance is tiny & has a case of the sissy arms
So getting an AR for her without going NFA due to the extra $ and the overall PITA hasn’t been easy. Right now I’ve got her setup with a 14.5" pinned rifle with MOE handguards, MBUIS, & Roger’s super stock. Soon will be a Aimpoint PRO. I didn’t go lightweight since she basically got my old rifle, but if SBRs weren’t an NFA item it’d be a mk18 clone for sure.
I couldn’t afford to shoot full auto even if someone gave it to me. so for me personally it’s a why bother situation… doesn’t make it right they are on list. It would be like given me a Lamborghini… nice to look at but can’t afford to enjoy it.
I just can’t understand any logic behind suppressors being on the list… and everyone knows it… that’s why the proliferation in recent years.
Absolutely nothing on the NFA required registration list warrants $200 and a six month wait for permission. I voted, but I should not have; it’s pointless to try to differentiate which is more invalid.
Machineguns. They’re the most demonized, so if those became common then it would be easier to remove restrictions on everything else.
If you don’t want to play political games then silencers would be the most useful.
I voted MGs. That brings the short barrel along with it. ![]()
I’d have to say both SBRs and suppressors. The SBR laws are stupid and pointless. If I have an 8" barrel on my AR and no stock on it, it’s a pistol. Take that same gun and put a stock on it, it’s a rifle, an extra $200, and 9 months to wait for it.
Suppressors shouldn’t be regulated at all. They should be something I buy over the counter like a butt stock or a trigger with no background check whatsoever.
Exactly. 2 birds with one stone. I can deal with the sound issue with less than a dollar for ear plugs but making a rifle smaller without going NFA is largely an expensive pita. Not everyone wants a pistol or bulpup but many want or even need an sbr. If I had an m16 it would mainly live on semi but I would have multiple options with such a gun.

Either suppressors due to the fact that they make shooting safer and more enjoyable. Or SBR’s. Having a short barrel doesn’t necessarily make the rifle more deadly. Especially since you can buy a Zastava PAP or Draco and have pretty much the same thing.
I voted for suppressors, but to be honest i see no point of items listed other than Full Auto Firearms and Destructive Devices being NFA in the first place and with FA its bit iffy, destructive devices OTH, im ok for there being some extra regulation for those. But being a European, this really doesnt concern me one way or the other, just my opinion on the subject.
“Machineguns. They’re the most demonized, so if those became common then it would b easier to remove restrictions on everything else.”
This.
Suppressors and SBR’s can still be manufactured and are readily available. The ban on MG manufacture has made full auto’s unobtainable for the common man.
There’s no reason for any of them to be regulated, there’s less than zero reason to regulate suppressors. They’re a hearing safety device and yet we’ve got to jump through hoops to buy one. I mean crap, try and drive your car around without a sound suppressor and see how long before you get a ticket, but you’ve gotta move heaven and earth for one for your rifle…
I agree there is NO reason for any of them to be regulated. However, keep in mind the reason suppressors were regulated was to help prevent poaching, which was a real threat in the early 30’s just after the depression. Today that theory really doesn’t apply.
IF that was the rationale, then they should have been covered under state fish and game laws and not federal firearms law. Secondarily the rationale doesn’t make much sense. All the regulation does is give you a list of who has a suppressor it doesn’t control in any way how it’s used. If someone is using it to poach, by definition how do you know it’s happening if you can’t hear the shot? ![]()
Let alone the fact that a suppressed rifle round sure as hell isn’t “silenced.”
