"If I Were the Devil" - The State of our Country? (Paul Harvey 1965)

At the height of the Cold War, Mr. Harvey (who in my opinion is one of the greatest “observationists” of human nature) had this insight to where we might be heading … Seems very pertinent to our current situation. Apparantly different versions out there.

Take of it what you will…

PAUL HARVEY’S ‘IF I WERE THE DEVIL’ TRANSCRIPT

If I were the devil … If I were the Prince of Darkness, I’d want to engulf the whole world in darkness. And I’d have a third of it’s real estate, and four-fifths of its population, but I wouldn’t be happy until I had seized the ripest apple on the tree — Thee. So I’d set about however necessary to take over the United States. I’d subvert the churches first — I’d begin with a campaign of whispers. With the wisdom of a serpent, I would whisper to you as I whispered to Eve: ‘Do as you please.’

“To the young, I would whisper that ‘The Bible is a myth.’ I would convince them that man created God instead of the other way around. I would confide that what’s bad is good, and what’s good is ‘square.’ And the old, I would teach to pray, after me, ‘Our Father, which art in Washington…’

“And then I’d get organized. I’d educate authors in how to make lurid literature exciting, so that anything else would appear dull and uninteresting. I’d threaten TV with dirtier movies and vice versa. I’d pedal narcotics to whom I could. I’d sell alcohol to ladies and gentlemen of distinction. I’d tranquilize the rest with pills.

“If I were the devil I’d soon have families that war with themselves, churches at war with themselves, and nations at war with themselves; until each in its turn was consumed. And with promises of higher ratings I’d have mesmerizing media fanning the flames. If I were the devil I would encourage schools to refine young intellects, but neglect to discipline emotions — just let those run wild, until before you knew it, you’d have to have drug sniffing dogs and metal detectors at every schoolhouse door.

“Within a decade I’d have prisons overflowing, I’d have judges promoting pornography — soon I could evict God from the courthouse, then from the schoolhouse, and then from the houses of Congress. And in His own churches I would substitute psychology for religion, and deify science. I would lure priests and pastors into misusing boys and girls, and church money. If I were the devil I’d make the symbols of Easter an egg and the symbol of Christmas a bottle.

“If I were the devil I’d take from those, and who have, and give to those wanted until I had killed the incentive of the ambitious. And what do you bet? I could get whole states to promote gambling as thee way to get rich? I would caution against extremes and hard work, in Patriotism, in moral conduct. I would convince the young that marriage is old-fashioned, that swinging is more fun, that what you see on the TV is the way to be. And thus I could undress you in public, and I could lure you into bed with diseases for which there is no cure. In other words, if I were the devil I’d just keep right on doing on what he’s doing.

Paul Harvey, good day.”

If I were the Devil, I’d do the opposite:

I’d teach people that they should cling to religion. That science and technology are my tools. That those who choose to worship otherwise should be destroyed (after being tortured into accepting that religion, of course). To hide from all that is strange and unusual, to mistrust everyone in their lives who is not of ‘their faith’. And to suspect those who are.

That the written word is magic and not to be used outside of proscribed circumstances. That all you need to learn you can learn from your father, your mother, your king, and your priest. All else is worthless and dangerous. Nature is abhorrent and evil: Those instincts with which you were born as a creature of God are to be shunned.

That there is nothing in the world worth knowing beyond the village walls. And nothing that is not known by the village priest. That there are witches and demon-worshipers among them, sexual deviants and social outcasts who must be burned for their sins. That the world is at the center of the universe, that Rome is at the center of the world, and that God speaks through the Pope and acts through the King.

And, finally, to absolve their tortured consciences, I’d teach them that they can be as horrible and cruel as they wish, so long as they accept God’s grace: Pedal rape and murder, corrupt Church and State, and protect pedophiles. Destroy the whole world and everything in it, but praise Jesus. I would remind them that good actions are simply weaknesses waiting to be exploited.

Men who believe this are our enemies: They send men onto buses loaded with the elderly, bombs strapped to their back. They walk into schools filled with children brandishing fire and steel. They kill whole families who get in the way of their narcotics businesses. And then they praise Jesus and sleep soundly, knowing that if their sins should catch up to them, that if a SEAL team lands in the courtyard of their compound or a rival finds them or an underling should grow too ambitious, that they shall be with the Lord in Heaven. And if not, the next morning they shall continue the devil’s bloody harvest in the name of God.

Wow. Care to expand more?

So belief in God = evil son of a bitch uh? That what you’re getting at?

No doubt all belief systems can be abused/skewed. Careful to assume 100% of a negative to ANY person/race/religion/belief/etc. So to believe in God means complete denial of science and you’re a PedoBear?

If I were the devil I’d post the same op ed piece that has been thrown around since LBJ and Carter, and plastered all over the internet while Clinton was in office.

It would be mindless, simplistic nonsense with absurd ideas for saving the country and it would be posted over and over on every message board until the members truly lost their minds, couldn’t take it anymore and killed themselves or others.

And that would truly be evil and only the devil would do such things.

Why doesn’t Paul just say I would entice people to break the 10 commandments in ever greater and grosser ways.

And from my point of view the God of the Bible was officially excommunicated from the U.S. at the ratification of the U.S Constitution.

Hardly.

A belief in God is not mutually exclusive with a belief in anything, science least of all. And evil sons-of-bitches come from all faiths, including atheism. But in their own minds, they are doing what is right by what they perceive, irrationally, as God.

My point was more that where we come from was far friendlier to the devil than where we are now and that those men who are evil today typically come from places that would seem like they’re out of our devil-friendly past: A half-dozen brutal thugs (see: kings, emperors) and a shaman who desire only control and comfort are easier to control than half-a-thousand individuals with half-a-thousand different desires.

That and if I were the devil, I could hardly think of a better conceit than ‘accept Jesus/Allah/Vishnu and you’re automatically saved, no matter what you do’. (Not saying there isn’t a purpose or good to forgiveness. But the idea that somehow a mass murderer and rapist is allowed a better place in heaven than a life-long philanthropic atheist or agnostic because they happened to correctly guess Who-is-in-charge while the other didn’t is patently ridiculous. If you don’t believe that, imagine if you chose wrong and Osama chose right: He’s in heaven enjoying his houris for masterminding the murder of 3000 Americans, a decade of conflict in Afghanistan, little girls getting shot in the face and having acid thrown on their faces for simply wanting an education… and no matter what Good you do for humanity, you’re going to Hell and will get to wear a pig’s nose for all eternity.)

Well-played, sir!

What’s your qualification for something that should be passed on?
Hardly.

A belief in God is not mutually exclusive with a belief in anything, science least of all. And evil sons-of-bitches come from all faiths, including atheism. Agreed. But in their own minds, they are doing what is right by what they perceive, irrationally, as God. Key word is irrational - regardless of belief/unbelief system.

Uhh? Not tracking.

Once again. Belief in God doesn’t make everyone a mindless, blind-faith idiot that condones that sort of horrible behavior - while later getting a “Get Out of Jail Free” card. Are you saying all “believers” are of the same mindset?

Unbelief, in MY view, doesn’t disqualify you to the “place” or a “better place” than a “mass-murderer or rapist”. I know plenty of people who are much better people than myself. Classic example is the Amazon tribe who was never exposed to the Spanish missionaries. Just because they weren’t exposed to the “official” rhetoric/religion would not disqualify them - in my book.

QUOTE]

  1. So, besides the references to “God”/religion - what part of the commentary do believe does not contribute to a weakened society?

  2. Just to get a bearing on your POV, are you an athesist/agnostic? From my POV, I believe in God but think organized religion is a “tool to control” for the most part. One of my best friends is an agnostic - who if it’s all “true” will definitely be accepted before me:)

  3. I fully admit I can’t “know”, I just try and be a good person - while believing in a definite “central” good/God/force/whatever.

  4. Point being - no matter what belief/unbelief system you’re into, it’s up to the individual to intelligently evaluate and come to thier own personal conclusion. Whatever your belief - cool beans brother.

  5. As I mentioned - take from it what you will. Good conversing with you. I enjoy differing opinions and friends - after all it doesn’t matter what happens - I appreciate free-choice!

If people are going to hammer Christianity they should at least understand what (Protestant) Christianity actually teaches lest they commit the straw man fallacy.

Also throwing around examples of good and evil would presuppose some justifiable standard of good and evil, then we could all understand that that person wasn’t just asserting his personal preferences. People wouldn’t want to assert arbitrary preferences (like another thread pointed out) as binding on the whole world, would they?

How about something that identifies a problem and offers a functional solution. I know that is like asking for flying unicorns on the internet but wouldn’t it be nice.

I hate to break it to you, having a bible doesn’t fix everything. Jim Jones and David Koresch had bibles, didn’t automatically make them good people did it?

Like guns a book is just a thing. It can be used by good people and bad people for good or bad.

Have a good night.

Books are just things seems pretty reductionistic. Do the ideas contained in them having anything to offer beyond what a cold piece of steel and plastic does? Does the Bible have better ideas than say the Communist Manifesto?

Does Jim Jones sully Jesus’ reputation somehow, or does Christ stand on His own merits?

The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he doesn’t exist.

    Keyser Söze

One topic has to do with saving the country, one topic has to do with dealing with dirt ball neighbors. Are you really trying to equate the two? At least my solution to dirt ball neighbors worked.

No…you did not. But the op ed piece you posted seemed to suggest it as a solution. And that is the part I took issue with.

As for society, I don’t have a solution as simple as a patio fireplace.

I posted this exact YouTube clip earlier this year.

In fact, the thread was titled “If I Were The Devil”

It went over 200 posts (mostly a0cake bashing Christianity)

Let me try it again.

Can YOU read the Communist Manifesto and remain christian without being a communist?

A book is a thing. It is a medium for recording ideas and transmitting them. So does a story, film or any other medium that transmits information from one person to another. That doesn’t make a CB radio any more significant than it actually is.

A book is neither inherently good or bad.

And anything can be more than the sum of it’s parts. A firearm can be much, much more than it’s simple construction. It can represent ideas, ideals and people. The Walker Colt comes to mind. But no matter what gun is being discussed, it won’t make a bad person good or a good person bad.

The Easter Bunny is damn clever.

That Santa Claus pulled off a neat trick too.

Zues, Apollo, Posiden…all amazingly clever. Clearly they truly exist.

Let’s not leave out the FSM.

Absolutely. The Hitler method. Convince people that they’re doing it for the good of their people. They’ll commit any atrocity you can dream of. Say it’s in the name of their people, or their God.

I don’t think that religion is bad, but extremism would be my tool of choice if I were the Devil.

And he made A FEW good points.

He came right out and said he has zero respect for religious people, and proceeded to prod at me until I blew up at him. Whatever though, water under the bridge. Speaking of a0cake . . . the hell did that guy go?
