I’m looking to build a SBR AK and am contemplating what barrel length to go with. Anyone have any opinions? I’m leaning towards 12.5", but am open to other ideas.
ETA: Gun will be 7.62x39
I think you’re on the right track. 12.5" provides a good compromise between ballistics, balance and useability.
I would tend to agree with 12.5".
A few years ago, I had the opportunity to shoot a real-deal AK-105 and AKS-74U side-by-side. Based on that experience, I went with the AK-105 length (12.5") when I did my SBR. Everything Templar says about it is right on the money.
12.5" is perfect IMO, which is the Hungarian AMD-65 as well as the AK-105.
The AMD’s aren’t too hard to find either…

Recently purchased a SLR 107 CR with muzzle attachment with intent to SBR it to 12.5" as this thread suggests as optimum, but when you add back the functional booster back in length, what are you gaining? I thought I understood the AK104 type booster is more to ensure reliable functioning in the shorter barrel length, not reducing flash or muzzle rise.
I didnt realize any kind of “booster” needed to be added to 12.5" guns. I thought that was only for smaller ones.
Correct, no booster required.
That’s why you only see the booster on Krinkovs.
The standard muzzle device on the 12.5" guns is in fact correctly categorized as a booster. It serves a dual role of increasing backpressure and suppressing flash.
It should work without the booster at normal temperatures. When it gets arctic cold, you might need it.

Katar are you running the “beer can” or the “krink” style booster on the 105/6’s. Ive seen your guns pictured with both before.
Inspired by Templar & The Katar. I used a Krink style booster. Considered the “beer can” and may try it out one day

This is pretty much the configuration I want for an SLR-107CR SBR project cloning an AK-104. Who did you have cut down your SLR-106CR’s barrel?
