…last night. It was around 1am and my Pits were going crazy so I grabbed the wife’s XD9sc (because my XD45c is in the shop…) and my Inova LED light and went to the kitchen to peer out of the bay windows and there was a late model pick-up truck directly out front of my home. The marker lights were on but I could not see a driver in the truck.
Then I hear a cordless drill revving a few times. So I thought 'there’s a guy trying to steal copper or something (my electrical box for the house is just outside the bay window) My company was hit for copper less than a year ago so that’s what I’m thinking.
So I go out the ‘front’ door on the side of the house and because of the bushes I have out there, I was able to sneak up on the guy. I shined the light on him though I did not point my pistol directly at him and I was like WTF are you and WTF are you doing?
He’s like ‘Hey, man I’m sorry to wake you but I’m with COX cable and I’m working on this cable tower.’
So I look on the other side of the bush I was partially behind and sure enough, he had the cable thing all apart.
Holy Christ. This guy couldve been shot.
Mind you, I sleep naked (it’s AZ and it’s f-ing hot) and at this point I realize fully that I’m out in front of my house with a gun and I’m naked. So I go back inside and call COX on my cell and ask if indeed they have a subcontractor working on my house. The guy on the phone at COX was like ‘Don’t shoot him! He works for us.’
What kind of company has people without a company truck come to someones house and start dicking with stuff in their yard at 1am in the f-ing morning???
All service and utility companies do.
While the rest of America is asleep, there are men rolling in trucks equipped with tools, keeping the power, water, cable, gas, phones, sewers, lights, sub stations, air conditioning and all other services that most people think magically appear, running. It would be convenient if things only break during normal business hours, and while people were at home, but thats not usually the case.
If you have utilities of any type on on your property, thats where it has to be fixed when it breaks. Many utilities are junctioned on private property. Thats how it works.
Always identify your target. Do NOT shoot my cable contractor.
I love the situational irony of being naked and having to call COX cable to check this guy. ![]()
BTW- Can’t wait to get moved out there. About another 3 weeks and escrow should be closed. Are there places out in the West Valley where you can go out in the desert and just blast away without running into trouble?
Let’s see,
- No company truck
- No courtesy call to say “hey, we’ll have a guy tearing shit apart in your bushes in the middle of the night.”
- I live in a city where copper and anything else valuable that is not bolted down (and even when it is) is stolen daily.
- I never pointed my pistol at him; well, at least not my XD.
That sounds crazy! I can’t get them to come out in the daytime… Maybe I should ask for the night time service…
I think he was lucky you were wide awake.
Well that is just nuts ( no pun intended) The cable box is in my backyard and they don’t want to go in the back with my Cane Corso’s. But your Pits let you know someone was there wish I still had mine. You having any litters?
No, they are both males and fixed.
Off Topic:
There are millions of acres of Bureau of Land Management property east and north of the Phoenix West Valley area.
This BLM land is available to “hunters and fisherman”, as well as special use passes for Mountain Biking.
The forest service land north of the Phoenix Metro area is available as well; near the city, it looks just like the Sonora Desert as opposed to any sort of forest. This USFS land prohibits shooting during high fire danger seasons.
Also, you bought your home at a great time. You should see much equity value increase in the next few years.

1 a.m. on private property/residential area is well outside the normal boundaries of business conduct for this area. I am well aware of the maintenance required to sustain public utilities.
i dont know about cable tv, all those services are considered essential except the cable tv.
The place everyone seems to go on the North Side is off of Table Mesa Road and I-17. Though, the last time I was there you were more likely to hit a kid on an ATV than a target if you weren’t careful.
