I run a pair of .45acp chambered M94 mausers with custom loads I make from .460 rowland brass and .45acp bullets. The brass I cut down to .888 and my headspace wont’ allow a case longer than that. The powder charges are slightly beyond top .460 rowland loads and ONLY for use in my rifles. I use the .460 brass so my .45acp pistols never see those rounds (head stamp diff).
My version of .460 runs a good bit hotter than any book load (I get flattened primers like any magnum but no cratering or piercing) and it’s different enough that I need a canonical name for it so my buddy and I can communicate clearly when we’re out shooting or in reloading. I can’t just call it the rowland because I may add a true rowland conversion to one of my pistols. Lately I’ve been calling these “the rifle forty fives” but that’s too many words.
So, help me come up with a name for it. It’ll never go commercial production and it’s only to help me speak clearly with my friend while we’re reloading and or shooting (or packing for a shooting trip).
something like .452 Whackarat or .451 Cayenne or .45 Cinderblock
My wife likes .45 Cinderblock and I kinda dig on it. Thoughts, other suggestions are welcome.
Recipe for a sample load: .460 Rowland case TTL: .888", CCI MLPP, waaay too much Longshot, 185gn Nosler JHP or 200gn MHBLRN (moly hollow base lead round nose)
If you want the actual powder charge, PM me. I would post it but I don’t want any rowland reloaders to think that it’s safe in a pistol. You obtain and use powder charge information from me at your own risk.
While I like the whoopass idea it’s not practical as I’ll have to wash my kids’ mouths out with soap if they say it (mostly kidding). Cinderblock is in the lead. Any other ideas?
I’d rather have it’s big brother 45 LC in my Win 94AE- less reloading. But I understand the need for a rebated rim for feeding, recoil must be almost nonexsistant in the heavy Mauser. With the big fat 45’s how many does it hold 3-4 in mag?
It uses 1911 mags. holds 6,7,8,10,15, etc… Usually has an 8 or 10 round mag in it.
I considered going with substantially bigger round but the ability to feed from a detachable 1911 mag is too much fun. Recoil with regular .45ACP pistol ammo is non-existant but when I start getting the loads out in space it’s got a little thump to it. It’s a little like a .45LC from a rifle. My sporter barrled gun weighs about 7lbs. The other one with a heavy barrel weighs like 12. It has no recoil pretty much at all until the loads get nasty and then it’s sort of a limp wristed shove. The 3rd one has a 28" tube and should have no recoil pretty much at all but I may do something more creative with that barrel.
Here’s an early pic of the heavy barrel 18". the sighting system on this pic is experimental and really just to see if we wanted the dot there or down the tube further. There’s a new stock being sanded on now. It goes to the smithy next month for a little drill and tap action. The RDS will mount just forward of the receiver ring. this is on a 93 action
tapered barrel. 16.5". Wears peep rear and the original post front from the swede donor
The 28" is mostly parts right now so no pics of anything interesting. I’m saving the pennies to get the chamber and flutes cut in the barrel. Another 94/96 action.
lunchbox brings up a point (at least one came to mind thanks to him):
please for the love of your favorite deity don’t get into massively overpressure loadings unless you’ve done the research. I worked with a couple of guys that had done all the dangerous bit of the research before loading a single granule over book max. That said, these things are so much fun.
I think I’m going to call the vote in favor of Cinderblock.
