I modified a Geissle trigger to offer 3 positions - safe, SSA, then S3G

I know Bill Geissele said on TOS he already made one and was waiting on the ATF for approval. I got tired of waiting and made my own. It has safe, a SSA like position 2, and S3G like position 3. I’m still playing around with the timing of the wall in position 2 as well as the spring rates. I’ll follow this video up with another using a trigger pull gauge hopefully this weekend and another live fire demo. Enjoy…

A couple of questions.

  1. Why does this need ATF approval?

  2. So position 2 is basically for precision and position 3 is for rapid fire (pulling the trigger really fast)?

  1. Because the BATFE has always said that having “any” M16 fire control group or otherwise full-auto-related parts in your AR15 is a crime. For a very long time this was interpreted as meaning M16 style bolt carriers were illegal, though that was later clarified as a non-issue and they are now somewhere between very common and approaching universal. Part of the M16 fire control group is a selector with three positions (both the detents but also the center section that blocks certain parts of the trigger assembly but not others), and I imagine that a selector intended to work with this sort of dual-mode trigger would also have three positions instead of two. Bill G. as a respectable manufacturer would want to be certain that neither he nor his customers would get in trouble using a part that kind of, sort of, resembles a full-auto selector, so he would seek written confirmation from BATFE that his design is accepted by them as not being full auto and not raising any NFA legal issues.

  2. Yes. And having once owned an SD3 trigger, it allowed for extremely fast semiauto fire, but I had a hard time using it for precisely aimed shots. I found it impractical because my preferred competition had much more need for somewhat precise shots than for bullet hose. But I’d jump at a chance to get a trigger with both modes as options with the flick of the selector.

is it possible to make position 2 the SD3 and position 3 the SSA instead? makes more sense to me to make the 2nd position the SD3 because in most classes with timed drills, you’re flipping the safety on and off constantly. for a longer range, more precise shot, you generally have more time so you’d flip to position 3 for the SSA function.

This but make the third position SSA-E instead of just SSA.

Also the Sd3g/sd-e would be the way for me

Good idea. That also means that the right side of an ambi selector would be horizontal and out of the way of your finger, instead of vertical and possibly in the way. (I realize that anyone making this type of trigger may need to develop their own custom selector, since a two-position semiauto won’t work, and an M16 selector presumably gets you in trouble with the BATFE.)

If geometries permit, perhaps a 45 degree position and a 90? That should make the ATF happy.

Yes and your reasoning makes sense. I think the logic for the other way is just to match the markings- SSA for the “semi” position and S3G for fast shooting on the “auto” position.

I’d buy the hell out of this. (Or modify one of my G2S triggers if I had the know-how.)

There’s such a variety of receiver markings nowadays (many don’t have ‘auto’ marked on them anyway - just ‘safe’ and ‘fire’) that i wouldn’t use markings to drive function. it’d be fun to think up potential markings for a trigger like this, though. a big circle for close range and a smaller one for long range, LOL.

forgot to say ‘great job’ on doing the mod - it’s got a lot of potential. you didn’t mention what trigger you started out with, to perform the mod on. I’d love to see a 0-45-90 selector with safe-SD3-SSA functions. battle arms development did experiment with a 0-45-90 full auto selector (i think), or 0-45-180, but decided to go with the standard 0-90-180 for their select fire selector center. i’m not sure i’ve ever seen a 0-45-90 switch.

I was thinking about it, and are all Geissele hammers and triggers the same (i.e. have the same sear geometries) among the “Super-” lineup? If so, then the difference between the SSA, SSA-E, and S3G would be entirely dependent on the sear/disconnecter piece (and its geometries). So if you mill out the pocket on the Geissele trigger to fit a second disconnector (one from an SSA and the other from an S3G) and use a selector switch similar to to the 3-round burst FCG (which cams between two disconnecters), then you could have a trigger like this.

IDK if any of this is correct, I’m just sittin’ here, on my lunch break, eatin’ my Chipotle, thinkin’ 'bout guns.

MM, short throw select fire saftey was my baby when I was at Battle Arms, there are no working 0-45-90 prototypes around. We did decide to go to 0-50-180 (its design is complete, and there are working prototypes, I didn’t get to see it through before I left) to address the muscle memory issue of some users that have been trained to go 180 to AUTO or BURST. AUTO or BURST at 90 degree would take some retraining to adjust, in the end it’s too different from the norm.

0-50-180 at least has two positions that are the same as before.

An ssa with ssa-e on the full setting would be kick ass… I’d take 4.

I’m not familiar with the SSA-E. Anyone know the physical differences between it and the SSA?

Some of the hammers appear the same or very similar, but the triggers are not.
