I’m currently bundled with CenturyLink and DirecTV. Each time I get ready to kick DTV to the curb football season starts again.
I’d love to have satellite TV with an ala cart set up where I can choose the channels I want to watch. Rumor says it is available in Canada but not here. I have no need for anything in Spanish, the various home shopping channels. I actually watch about 10 channels other than my local stuff.
Cable TV and most internet providers have a monopoly on their local markets and they know it. We get to pay accordingly.
TV is a HUGE TIME WASTER. I want to be albe to watch it once in a while and want my 16 weeks of NFL with the playoffs and Super Bowl. I missed the DVR for a while but now I don’t. It’s like cutting carbs. It sucks for a while then you don’t miss it.
I cancelled cable TV over 7 years ago. I have a grandfathered cell phone contract with AT&T, even before they were Cingular (17 years ago). It’s $71/month with unlimited data, unlimited texts and 450 minutes a month. I have about 8 billion rollover minutes, so I never pay extra charges. I just started a new job today, and they reimburse me for my cell phone bill anyway. And gym membership. And tuition. :lol:
I have a Internet provider called Grande Communications. I pay $76/month for a VOIP landline and 60MBps down/12 MBps up. The landline is handy for work conference calls. It also means I don’t have to give my cell number to very many people.
I figured the money I save pays for two training class fees and the associated ammo every year. With the new job paying the cell bill, it’s like getting four free NFA tax stamps every year.
Sounds very much like my area. All we have is Comcast and Brighthouse. They both suck and are expensive as hell. I opted for internet only and use Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime. Hulu is garbage though and if it was not for certain shows on there I would stop paying for it.
It works well. I do want to get an outdoor antenna in the hopes that it will work better. I get ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, PBS. Each channel has at least two channels, one has 3 and I get 4 from PBS. It is either crystal clear or a no go. Not like old school antennas where you could watch it a little fuzzy.
SlingTV on roku offers live streaming of sports and certain TV channels. NHL even has it’s own streaming channel that’s in the base package along with AMC being included in the live streaming IIRC. The big draw to me is that the number of things of interest per dollar seems to be astronomically higher.
We have like 3 or 4 shows that we DVR then watch in the last hour before bed after the critters are asleep. Other than that it’s kids shows while the wife and I are being productive around the house. Which is part of the reason I want to cut the cost down significantly. Those 3-4 shows plus kiddy TV and college football are not worth the $1200+ a year…

My internet went from 30mbps to 15 mbps, but this feels insanely slow. I wonder if this is intentional as an “incentive” to get customers to upgrade their internet to their “high speed” version to the tune of $74/mo…
You will want to upgrade your plan Euro. Netflix streams in HD now and they (Suddenlink for me) capped my data real quick. Im sitting exactly where you are price wise…71.00 or so a month for 30mbps down and 350gb /mo. I also had to upgrade to a DOCSIS 3 modem since mine was older and hurting my pull. Since your near a large city, pick up a HD antenna and you will be able to pull quite a few channels for free. When I was an hour from Houston, I could get around 50 channels. Just another option.
I believe I am under a 50mbps plan it is slow as hell on my Xbox. Hulu will constantly buffer (a Hulu problem as it is) and Amazon will constantly go into a error message and says try again cannot load. That “speed” should be more than sufficient to stream HD videos and play online gaming once in a damn blue moon.
A) There is no data “limit”. It’s cable internet, so I can stream videos 24/7 and never reach a “limit”
B) I don’t really “need” to watch anything. My life is incredibly busy, and time spent watching TV is usually when I’m procrastinating from something else. I don’t watch any shows whatsoever on a regular basis. I’ve never seen The Walking Dead, Mad Men, House of Cards, or any of that stuff. When I do want to watch a series of TV, I will get it from the library for free. Right now I’m watching the Office and I’m on Season 7. That’s actually what made me pull the plug. I’ve been watching Top Gear, The Office, and Parks and Recreation so frequently (for free) when I went back to watching something on TV I was bombarded with commercials that irritated the hell out of me. An episode of the office is 21 minutes long. But 30 on TV. That’s 1/2 hour of commercials every 3 episodes. Insanity.
We use an Ouya gamecube, as a dedicated system, wired into router.
Runs like a charm.
XBMC/kodi has a website with all kinds of info.
Installing can be a bit tricky, helps if youre a bit tech savvy, or have friends
