I just bought a LMT MWS 6.5 CM barrel

Im taking this this bad boy out and see how it shoots. The fit and finish is Noveske-ish… Which normally LMT and Colt…are not know for their aesthetics, but it is a beauty. Its a SS 20 inch variety. My CL 16 barrel shoots sub Moa so I expect this will do the same. I think for shits and giggles I will take my box of American Gunner 140 grain ammo and try to pop the 1,300 target with my first round or at least mag.

My question is for you guys that have super apps, what do you think the DOPE in mils will be. The ammo list 2690fps so Im guessing about 2,500fps out of my LMT, just my guess , if anyone knows better , please advise. Elevation is 1,250 and should be about 85 degrees.

Ill give complete range report on new barrel and will figure out my own DOPE, just thought it would be fun to attempt a first round hit. Mark has loaded some ammo to do a ladder test so hopefully we can figure out a good load without too much of an ass whipping. We are going to dump about 20 rounds to season the barrel before the ladder test, not sure if that matters, but its the plan. And will be fun so let it fly!

Here you go:

Vegas, your the man. Ill let you now how many attempts to get on steel.

Many thanks

PB

My pleasure. May the winds be favorable!

Nice,

I also picked up a 6.5CM barrel the last time i was in the country and for the limited amount of rounds I put through it, I was impressed, shot 140gr American gunner into a 4 shot clover leaf with one flyer right right after zero, shots 5 though 10.

Cant wait to load some ammo for it and see how much i can get out of it

My only beef is the gas guns are ROUGH on brass.

The Starline holds up better than the Hornady IME. The thicker case web/less capicity requires about .3 gr. less powder for same velocity- using RL16.

Good friend had a near case separation with Hornady brass after 3 firings on his 6.5 bolt gun. In contrast, my 7mm RM with 6 firings, some kinda hot, with no issues thus far and look almost new.

Been thinking about one of those. Are you going to shoot it w/ a suppresor?

Don’t start leading me down this path. I’m still getting the 308 sorted.

Sorry, I missed this, yes I run a suppressors.

I did a bit of a write up in our thread about reloading. But let me say the barrel is a laser. We did a ladder test and everything shot 3 round sub-moa groups, and several were half minute groups. Only three rounds but the consistency was crazy. And several we’re two shots in one hole and one beside it. Im sure when we get a load it will be a half minute to 1/3 min gun.

I am very excited about this barrel.

At some point, the 6.5CM barrel is a direction I want to head with my MWS. Still trying to reload .308 right now. Once that is complete and satisfied, I will move to 6.5.

We finished up the ladder test. Again every 3 round group held at least MOA, with several in the .5 MOA range. My only disappointment is I’m having a fair amount of failure to feed. Once we get our load done I’ll find out if it’s just the American Gunner 140 grain ammo or all ammo.

Even though I am not LE nor plan to hunt, I can’t tolerate reliability issues. Next week, I will run without can and see if that is the source of my problem. Still I want to be able to run it suppressed.

PB

I understand reliability being required. If I buy a piece of gear and its unreliable, I almost feel like my money has been stolen.

Copy that, I have some tricks of the trade I might try. If successful, I’ll pass them on. Reliability is #1 in my book.

PB

Sure, first rule; it’s gotta go “bang”.

What’s your gut say PB; cartridge OAL/bullet profile, BCG/extractor, buffer weight?
I had feed issues with my 6.5 gas gun and it was buffer. Went with a KAK Heavy Buffer (or something) and it’s been ON.

Good idea. We may just try a beefier buffer. PB got word that the 6.5s can just be fussy with the suppressor… but Pappa is all about the can. Ejection seems milder than the .308 barrel, but there’s definitely room to try a heavier buffer. Thanks!

My gut says I have work to do. This long pointy high BC bullet is just less forgiving than our 175 SMK’s.

Gunna try various thangs. I have no idea as I think I already have Clint’s heavy buffer.

I took out the 6.5 today and tried shooting it without a can, it ran like a top with Am gunner 140 BTHP. I then put the can on and shot 20 rounds of Match Hornady 143 ELD X bullets and they ran perfect. I was very encouraged because I have a 500 of such bullets. Maybe the tip makes the difference?? I hope so.

PB

Glad it’s coming together.
