I have 6 types of ammo and need to know which is the weakest

Of these, which do you think are the weakest? I’ve listed them in order from what I think will be weakest to stiffest.

What do you think? I’m not sure if the 55 Wolf or the 62 BB will be weaker. I don’t have time to chronograph this stuff before the test, nor do I have a chrony.

By “weaker” I’m looking for the lowest recoil impulse or the least likely to cycle a tightly-gassed or heavy-buffered gun.

My bet is on the BB 62gr. I’ve not chronographed any of those other than XM193, and for whatever else is wrong with it, it’s 5.56 velocity.

Have you tried 55 grain UMC. I used 100 rounds of it last summer to me it seemed weaker than wolf 62 grain. Sorry no chronograph to prove it.

Thomas, I gotta go with what I have on hand, which is the 6 above (plus some corrosive that I don’t want to dig out, and some Barnaul 62 that IIRC is the same thing as BB 62).

No personal experience with brown bear. But everything else on the list looks right to me.

From the info on this page it looks like the 55 grain wolf might be the slowest at least, which also being the lightest would incline me to believe it’s the weakest. Going by momentum (Gfps meaning grains x fps) it looks like the SB/BB might even be stiffer than the XM193?

55gr Wolf 2872 fps = 157,960 Gfps
55gr M193 3040 fps = 167,200
62gr Silver Bear 2822 fps = 174,964 Gfps
62gr M855 2909 fps = 180,358 Gfps

I’m assuming the Brown Bear is loaded to the same velocity as the Silver Bear and only the case/coating is different (steel lacquer for BB, zinc polymer for SB). Would really skew my testing if that proves true. Might be better to just go with the proven under-performer, Wolf 55 grain. :smiley:

If you’re looking for some loads to test functional thresholds, try the Rem UMC 55gr, some HSM 55gr FMJ, or some commercial available frangibles.

Of those you list, Wolf would be high on my list.

The Fed XM193 can be wildly inconsistent, ranging from a standard SAAMI 55 ball load, to a proof load.

Tula, it short strokes in three out of four rifles that I have tried it in.

I also chroned some PMC two weeks ago and got an average velocity of 2712. That’s pretty anemic.

Likely the Wolf 55.

The Brown Bear is stouter than the wolf. That is one reason why I now buy brown bear instead of wolf.

i dont know if this helps any but i shot some wolf 55 and brown bear 62 yesterday and thw olf was ejecting about 7 feet at 3’oclock and the brown bear at 4:30/5 o’clock.
the federal bulkpack ammo i also shot yesterday was ejecting at 2 o’clock and falling about a foot from me
