I Got A Virus From Looking At Guns

This is sort of a call for help, but mostly a PSA.

I was on TOS lurking in their 10-22 section. A thread about a multi-cam 10-22 take down caught my attention. When I clicked on the link, something took over my computer. It wiped most of the programs off of my home page. It took over my Avira Ant-virus. I’m stuck taking my computer into a computer doctor to save what I can.

I’d stay clear of any sites that claim to sell a multi-cam 10-22 takedown.

backup in the future

create a clone of your boot and have a bu of your regular data drive if it ever happens again just clone over the boot

also good if you have photos etc… you dont want to loose etc…

sorry to hear bummer for sure !

Thanks! Luckily all photos saved to external hard drive.

There is not enough information here to know for sure but if your Avira was up to date you probably got into scareware not a virus. Reboot your computer in safe mode by tapping the F8 key as the computer is booting. Then run system restore. That should fix your problem. System restore is a powerful tool for repairing your computer. When you have a problem you should not delay using it.

I quit going to the Drudge Report because of the garbage I was getting in to, scareware and viruses.

Someone correct me if I am wrong but in my personal experience if you have up to date virus protection, viruses are not the threat they once were.

Need more info.

For starters, what browser are you running?

Malwarebytes - get the free version
http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/
run it… just let it do the basic scan.

CCcleaner - get it also free
http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

run it also.

Between those two it will clean all the trash off your PC. Be sure you have all your passwords as it will delete them and you will need to re-enter for various sites, etc…

If you have something those won’t take care of, you probably will need someone to do it for you.

I did what Suwanee Tim told me to do. My PC is back! Apparently I had two competing Microsoft programs that were canceling each other out. Old program was live care. It’s gone now. I downloaded the updated Microsoft service pack.

Avira has updated, and is now doing a complete scan. Hopefully all goes well.

As far as which browser, I have no clue. I am a complete computer illiterate.

Thanks for the help so far. You guys saved me a lot of money. I appreciate the responses.
