I don't reload- is 300BLK worth it?

So I may be in the process of building an suppressed SBR, but as everyone knows, no suppressor in the world can take away the supersonic crack of 5.56. I am not reloading yet, and not sure if I want to ever reload such a round that I can go through thousands in a day- so my question is- is the 300BLK round worth it to non-reloaders?

Here’s a better question: For those of you who have a 300BLK gun, do you find you can train interchangeably with 5.56? I’m thinking if it is, I can keep the 300BLK specifically for HD/hunting, and train with my 16" DD/BCM. My main concern here is the sound in an emergency situation- not too worried about wearing muffs if I’m training.

I can’t answer the training part as I am still deployed and haven’t had a chance to shoot my AAC upper that is sitting at the house.

As for reloading, AAC keeps saying that the UMC ammo coming out will retail at $12.99 per box of 20. I imagine that street price on that will be slightly less.

Right- I cannot currently find that price anywhere. The lowest I found was 18.99/20ct. Even $13 per box is still twice as expensive as 5.56, but if recoil aspects are similar, as stated before I can just train with 5.56 and designate 300BLK as my HD/hunt gun.

You can get GUNN subs and supers on AIM for under $15 a box or under $14 per box in some quantity. I think that is currently the best value given 130grain SOST supers and 220grain SMK subs. If that is reasonable to you I don’t think you should have any concerns about moving forward.

Ah thanks. They’re all sold out, but I would guess the 130gr would do well in a 1/8 barrel. That’s a fair deal for a SPR I guess.

The cheap ammo is coming out - they are finishing running oodles of 125 and 220 for a while longer until we have a 6 month supply, then will change over to running the UMC mostly.

I currently do this with my 6.8, if I change my HD gun to a 300 BLK I would do the same thing.

I’m really hoping that cost effective alternatives are soon to hit the market. Remington 220gr is getting expensive to shoot with at $18/box.

Should I hold off on the upper until a cheaper alternative comes out or is it just a matter of time?

Wolf needs to jump in and make some steel case.

Contact them here and tell them, maybe they will if they get enough interest.

Depends on if you believe we will follow through on coming out with it. I know we will, so I would say buy it now. Or wait and see - depending on if you want to shoot higher priced ammo while waiting - GUNN has ammo for $14 a box now.

Unfortunately it is not yet posted on their website & their distributor (AimSurplus)is out of it.

Anybody tried the 147gr load from Summit? I’ve seen that stuff on gunbroker for about $13 a box.

AAC is getting the first shipment of the Atlanta Arms 125 grain hunting/LE/self-defense ammo on Wednesday and will send it off to distributors who have orders in. Buy it while you can - as it is going to take a long time to get more bullets made - they are custom. So at least get enough to hold you off until the Barnes ammo is out - which could be January.

Per Tokarev… a bit more detail. Summit 147 supers in LC brass for $13 a box on gunbroker. Another option and new low price point. They quote 2025fps.

If this stuff shoots okay and cycles, it should make a nice supersonic plinking load.

I wouldn’t worry about the sound in an emergency situation, look up auditory exclusion.

As I understand it, your brain might not “hear” the gun blast, but the damage is still done.

Bad guys will hear the report even if the shooter doesn’t.

Haven’t you been watching “The Walking Dead?” Zombies are drawn by the sound of gunfire…
