I put a deposit on a new Colt LE6720 today, and I should.be able to bring her home in the next week or so. As an owner of two Colt 1911’s and a Harley Davidson I KNOW firsthand that certain things lend themselves to modification. However, as I’ve gotten older( and wiser…I hope) I question some of the mods made to folk’s AR-15’s. I see weapons that are more suitable to kicking in doors in Afghanistan, or some cities here, than what the average user will actually do with them. I’m not looking to pick a fight, but taking a $1000-1500 rifle and then hanging everything this side of an expresso machine on them seems crazy. I think good sights( maybe an optic) , a quality sling and magazines, and a weapon’s light for HD purposes should cover 99% of the scenarios John Q. Public will ever face. What happened to the KISS principle ? Thoughts ?
The KISS principle is alive and well on this forum. I think you’re off to a great start with the right idea in mind. If you choose to mount an optic, just pick one that does the job you want it to do. There are more light/mount combos to count nowadays so no issues there. As for slings I prefer the Vickers 2-point sling from Blue Force Gear.

If I had the cash right now, I would buy a 16" BCM idlength, a set of FEE handguards, and an A1 carry handle upper receiver, and a mount for a surefire scout and call it good. I want it for a light weight pack/trunk rifle. My other ARs are kitted out so I don’t need another one of those.
People often talk about how much stuff folks hang off their AR’s… maybe I’m not looking at the right rifles, but it seems like most of the ones here in the pic thread are well thought-out. If a person needs what’s on the rifle, then it’s a good move.
For me, a light and a sling will reside on any defensive rifle, and if the setup allows, so will an Aimpoint micro. Still KISS, IMO…
Flat top with a DD A1.5 or Magpul MBUS Pro rear sight would weigh a couple ounces less than an A1 upper. Paired with a 16" ELW-F barrel, KMR10, and a standard lower with a BCM stock and grip, and you’ve got one lightweight, capable carbine. I’ve considered a similar build myself using my M&P Sport upper receiver/BCG/CH and complete lower. Weighing some parts on-hand and using some online weights, the rifle should come out to around 6 pounds, 4 ounces.
Don’t think of your rifle as a Harley Davidson. Lots of mods you can do, but while mods are the name of the game on a Harley, functionality is the game in these rifles.
Good advice, I would just change the order of priority. I know lots of folks who buy quality AR’s and accessories but can’t fill the stacks of magazines they own. Your gun will function fine without 3, 4 and 5, but is a club without 1 and 2…
Hey Old Grunt: I like the reordering that Bossman did to HighDesert’s list. I would add one thing though - an ambi-selector. I also run QD Swivels. My rifles and shotguns go into the safe minus slings, less clutter that way. My tactical analysis of an HD scenario where I deploy the bedroom rifle doesn’t involve slinging, but that is just my read.
I forgot, BCM/other tac latch/charging handle.
At the risk of adding a little weight, a Redimag? Especially for a “truck gun”. I like the idea of having a spare mag at hand w/out worrying about its location.
I dont know the weight it would add but looks to me it would be pretty much center/balance.
It doesn’t involve slinging until you wake up in a fog, grab your rifle, start clearing your house and end up within arms reach of an intruder (usually multiple), which turns into a fight/scramble for control of the weapon…much harder to take when it’s on a sling. Of course it’s true that these type of high intensity “HD” situations are not common, but the fact is it doesn’t happen until it happens; and when it does happen, there’s pretty much zero difference between “HD” and mil/LE urban ops/room clearing, except you don’t have a partner or team with you. All the more reason to retain control of your weapon with a sling…
One more add to the list…although not attached to the rifle, but certainly part of the process…QUALITY TRAINING.
This will about cover it for a gun to be used for HD and just as an all around gun for a non-LEO.
I might consider adding a MagPul grip, hand guard and stock (I’ve become fond of the MagPul MOE SL stock). Even if you opt to add the afore mentioned MagPul furniture, you’re not adding much weight to the gun, and you’re not dumping a tone of money either.

Most on this forum don’t hang nc star laser or bipods on their hd rifle like ‘other’ places on the net. I guess it really matters what you think excessive is.
Nice. The rear sight is installed correctly so you’re off to a good start ;). Now estimate how many Pmags you think you need and buy twice that many (you can always sell extras to TOS-ers when the next panic hits). Then buy 3x the ammo you think you should have.
FWIW, I have a 12 year old 6920 that I have done nothing to, but shoot. No optics. Regular carry handle sight. It has a silent sling that will get replaced with a Giles one day.
If I had the money, I’d buy the A4 20" just because I like the long rifle.
I think people put too much on their guns sometimes. I had a pretty exhaustive rifle course with rack grade 20" A2s and learned a lot. Most of my rifles are pretty minimal. People get pretty ninja turtle with their stuff but hey free country.
