Hypothetical Situation: Which do you chose?

Here’s the scenario- You are at a friend’s house and don’t have your own rifle with you. Your friend is not a very serious shooter, he only has two rifles. One is an M1 Carbine he inherited from his grandpa. The other is a DPMS (or some other brand you hate) AR15 in standard M4 clone configuration. Both have been test fired and are known to function.

Suddenly, a riot breaks out and you can’t get back to your home… you’re going to have to dig in and wait it out. (If you want, you can substitute a riot for Taliban paratroopers, Chinese invasion, zombie apocalypse, or whatever else suits your fancy… point is, the situation is not good.)

Being that you are the more skilled shooter, your friend gives you first pick of his rifles. Do you take the M1 Carbine or the “questionable” AR15?

(The purpose of this is to see if you’d take the good quality rifle that you’re probably not very familiar with, or a platform that you are familiar with but are not confident of the quality. I will respond in the thread, after a few responses… I don’t want to sway the results.)

Edit: Yes, I realize it should be “choose” in the title… typo, sorry.

AR… ammo availability for the M1 Carbine would be the deciding factor. I know for fact I can get 5.56 from somewhere around me, considering 5.56 is the standard patrol rifle caliber for the mil and most if not all LEO’s… its available

Not to mention… the AR only has to work until I can take down some shitbag and upgrade to a better one…

I would go with the platform I had been training with, granted, if I KNEW it functioned properly.

I would want a weapon I knew like the back of my hand over something I had to “Learn” when it counted most.

Maybe I could get lucky and take an ememies weapon at some point or work my way back to my own weapons

I would use the DPMS to shoot the friend, take both rifles, and fight my way to the Colt factory.

Friends dont let friends shoot DPMS

This was hard for me to come up with a response to. Part of the reason is for a period of about two months, an M1 Carbine was my “go to” rifle while I was moving and had to be separated from my AR temporarily. As a result, I am reasonably proficient, although not as much as with an AR.

To me, while I would prefer a better quality rifle, I’d still take the AR15. Better ballistics are a major player in that decision, as is magazine capacity. Assuming the rifle works when I pick it up, having been test fired, it will probably work long enough for me to upgrade or for the situation to be over.

lol. “Trick question, I wouldn’t be friends with anyone who owned a DPMS as their only AR.”

There are other forums for stuff like this.

It’s general discussion… and I think it has a valid point.

I would take the rifle my friend is “least skilled” with. I’d rather have a kinda crappy rifle and somewhat reliable backup than terrible backup and a better rifle.

Good thinking. Thats something Im kind of upset I overlooked!!

What he said.

Is TOS down or something?

What the heck guys? There’s a tacked thread on “Top Shot”, a dumb TV show, but a thread that addresses the topic of quality vs. familiarity is not good enough for you? “Girl Facts vs. Guy Facts” is fine, but this isn’t… at least mine deals with firearms.

… I think y’all seriously just hate me no matter what I say or do.

Don’t feel bad man. I posted (what I thought was) a very interesting thread about sandwiches in GD my first week or so here which was met with an even harsher reception.

The mention of zombies generally doesn’t help a post either.

It makes it really hard to even be the least bit interested in keeping people happy, when nothing you do is good enough.

I swear, some people need to grow some thicker skin before they get on the internet. If the mention of “zombies” as the obvious, joking, general purpose “gun emergency” is too hard on folks… I really can’t imagine how these people function in society.

I must say that this statement is a bit ironic.

I realized that to an extent.

However, I started a thread looking for some legitimate ideas and feedback, and these guys took the time out of their day to come in here for the sole purpose of making rude comments. There is a distinct difference.

Maybe I can help.

In a lot of ways this forum is the Unarfcom (like the uncola) and they try and create a clear distinction between this forum and “all the rest.” So there are two things at work here.

  1. They pride themselves on being above the typical “What caliber for zombies” and “What rifle for SHTF?” bubba posts that plague most firearm message boards.

  2. While most won’t admit it there is something of a “new guy needs to know his place” rule for acceptance. If you don’t come here with some kind of specific LE, military or “I attend every class taught by…” pedigree you are a nobody until the group thinks otherwise.

And it isn’t those who run the forum who are responsible for #2, it is those who are trying to prove themselves to be one of the “cool kids” so they will be accepted by those who run the forum.

It took me a little while to catch on to the unique environment that exists here. Thankfully I came with enough “small arms nerd pedigree” that they overlooked my unintended tomfoolery long enough for me to catch on.

So take a deep breath, don’t take it personal and read a few tacked topics about the environment they are trying to foster. I suspect that eventually you will be thankful that they are a bit gunshy about some of the silly crap that is standard fare everyplace else.

Lamar, I’m going to be frank about this.

There is an undercurrent in many of your posts that seem resentful of this board and the consensus opinions of many of our SMEs and posters FAR more experienced than you regarding quality ARs. This thread is a good example of it: https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=92920

Where Iraqigunz said to you summed up what could be a response to many of your posts:

Lamar, If our snobbery is too much then you know where the door is.

and:

Many personnel on this site train with their AR’s, shoot them alot and consider them their go to guns whether it be for home defense, hiking, camping, etc…

Some of us shoot thousands of rounds per year. So your little “internet” assertion is nothing more than a stupid troll move. Thin ice is forming in your vicinity. I suggest you tread with care.

Lamar, Some of your posts read like covert excuses or rationalizations for lesser brands like these:

And if Colts were not out of spec… Then neither is DPMS. It’s just a different spec. Olympic Arms is probably “in spec” too… doesn’t make it a good spec.
