This may be the most fun one can have with their clothes on from what I see. Anyone seen this vid and or actually done it? I’m not a big hunter, but OMG what I wouldn’t do to try that.
Yes, it’s big down here. I’ve only done it once but I do a ton of hog hunting, typically from a moving truck while we’re chasing them down. It’s pretty wild.
Munch520 came down and did some hunting with us recently and ironman08 is coming down in a couple weeks as well. Munch520 had to cancel because he’s not allowed this time…!
Our local shop, Modern Pawn just did some helo hunting with the guys from Wild River Ranch and LWRC withthe UCIW and 16" six8 rifles with 90gr Gold Dot. Pretty impressive stuff.
My next time out I’ll be using a 9" blackout with 110gr Black Tip TSX and 125gr Pink Tip. Looking forward to it.
One of these days I’ll have to set up an m4c/Lightfighter hunt at my buddy’s ranch. We all chip in and we can get the helicopter pretty cheap.
I would love to do this but I would have a problem if the hogs were not picked up and used for feeding the homeless or something. I would always get pissed if i lost a bird while hunting. I understand totally that hogs a vermin but I still would have a problem with letting them rot n the field.
Cory, my understanding is usually they are, but not always. Then the meat is typically donated. In fact some people hunt hogs all the time and donate the meat from the hunts constantly.
There’s a great helo hog hunt on YouTube where you can see the red dot, I think it’s “nueces county helicopter hog hunt”, which is my county. Good stuff.
Hate to be “that guy” but as cool as the video is, I’m not a fan. As a subsistence hunter and someone to went to school for ecology, I have no issue with the wholesale slaughter of this invasive species, or people having fun doing it. However, there is no way to insure even moderately effective shot placement. Shooting indiscriminately into a large group of pigs hitting multiple extreamly tough animals in non-vital areas would be a no go for me. Leaving any that were not killed to a slow death is an issue for me.
Shooting at a moving target from a moving target seems difficult, but they make it look easy. How difficult is that? The pilot seems to do an excellent job getting the shooter right on top of them where needed, but I wouldn’t want to make a complete tool of myself and have a 1/1000 hit ratio.
Back in February Massad Ayoob went on a hog hunt with pistols in a lightweight Hiller helicopter. Here’s a picture of how that turned out.
His friend Jonathon Strayer had his pistol out and was just about to draw a bead on the beast when they lost power at 100 feet altitude and crashed into a tree. Mas said that when they finished crashing and finally came to a stop that Strayer was still holding his pistol and he never stuck his finger inside the trigger guard. That’s discipline!
My retirement present to myself is to do a Helo hog hunt in Texas and a Caribou hunt up in Alaska. Already have the funds set a side so once that first pension check hits and I’M officially retired its game on.
