Anyone catch this show on the History channel? It’s a pretty unflinching look at men from various countries, mostly US, who set off to fight ISIS. Some have mil backgrounds, some don’t. Some there because they feel ISIS is a legit threat to the western world and evil incarnate and must be stopped where they are, some adventure seekers. Some just nuts. Some on the edge of the battle space helping with tac med, some looking for a fight. Some team up with Kurds, some with Iraqi’s etc. The one episode I watched was compelling.
That looks very interesting…Thx for the heads-up!
I don’t know man, just like the National Geographic and Discovery Channel, the history channel use to be one of my “go-to” channel when they had great documentaries about WW2 and Modern Marvels but then they went a different direction with:
Ancient Aliens
Swamp People
Ax Men
Appalacian outlaws
Cajun Pawn Stars
Ice Road Truckers
UFO Files
Alaskan Bush People
American Pickers, and started showing reality shows for red necks. I don’t know if I can watch History Channel anymore. I have switched to American Heroes Channel and Science Channel for my night time TV.
I think you can take any professional trade, add a intimidating adjetive to the end of it and create a name for a show for History, Discovery or National Geographic:
Carpet installation cartel
Window tinting titans
Chimney cleaning Mafia
Janitor wars
Certified Public Accountant black ops
The Secret life of Road Side Assistance outlaws
Watched an episode last night. Interesting. At least worth watching a few more. I’m gonna put it on my DVR and see how it pans out.
Natgeo “Chain of Command” was pretty good for the handful of episodes I watched.
Embedded in Iraq within the last 12-18 mths.
This is exactly the problem. History Channel used to be good. But now has so much crap on it that I don’t bother to check it to see what it has playing any more.
Hard to trust the History Channel these days but I’ll check it out.
I don’t know when this all started but I think it was Deadliest Catch on Discovery and then the A & E network decided to start making reality based programs for the History Channel that has absolutely nothing to do with history. The Discovery channel use to produce award winning tv documentaries like Planet Earth, Life, Frozen Planet, The Blue Planet, Shark Week and Galapagos. Now they show Naked and Afraid, Gold Rush, Moonshiners, Misfit Garage, Amish Mafia and Diesel Brothers and these shows have absolutely nothing to do with the original concept of Discovery. I will say, Mythbusters, Man vs Wild and Dirty Jobs were great shows that you could actually learn a thing or two from.
I moved over to the Science Channel which has started to mimic Discovery (the parent company), but for the most part they have some good shows like How its Made, Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman, How the Universe Works, Curiosity, Battlebots, Build it bigger, Extreme Engineering but are starting to add more and more shows about aliens and conspiracies.
American Heroes Channel (Military Channel) has great shows: Weaponology, WW2 in Color, The Color of War, Triggers: Weapons that changed the world, Special Ops Missions, WW2: Witness to war, War Stories, Nazi Secret Files, WW2 confidential, Nazi Assault of Afrika, Evolution of Evil, Ultimate Warfare, Ultimate Weapons.
They need to get back to producing high quality HD nature/history/science documentaries with Brooks Moore, Mike Rowe, Arthur Kent and Davin Attenborough as narrators.
I first noticed it with Discovery Channel, which used to be a favorite and then it was The Learning Channel which was the next one to start showing reality TV crap rather than anything related to learning.
And then late night TV went down hill when they got rid of Jay Leno, David Letterman and John Stewart and replaced them with Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmle, Jimmy Fallon, Trever Noah, Bill Maher and Chelsea Handler. Complete Garbage!!
Honestly I stopped giving a damn about late night TV when Carson called it quits. Leno did a good job but I just didn’t really care about the show anymore. Letterman got boring in the late 80s and Kimmel ceased being funny when the Man Show ended. Never really watched any of the others and with the exception of shows like Vikings and the Americans and the occasional episode of Nova I don’t even watch network channel programs.
For most of the 90s I lived on Discovery, Learning and History Channel until they went to crap. Then starting with The Sopranos I pretty much just watched movie channel series. And now with Netflix I pretty much just pick and choose.
I was thinking about posting about this show after the first episode but wanted to be sure. Now I’m sure, it looks to be a great show.
In not so many words they actually pretty much tell you how to contact the YPG via social media.
Further research shows that some of the westerners fighting with the YPG are simply die hard marxists, because the eventual goal of the Kurds is a socialist government of their own, which other westerners are shocked to find out when they get over there.
Gotta hand it to them though (the volunteers) they have my respect.
I’ve watched the show from the beginning and like it. It is compelling and the characters bring you into their personal lives. There is one guy there that travels back to the states after 4-5 months is Syria and has a really hard time relating with his friends here. He’s doing a lot of drugs back here in the States and near the end of his section of the show he basically states he’s going back to Syria because its where he is most comfortable.
I’ve been watching both Hunting ISIS and Chain of Command, both very good.
War Junkies ! are still junkies.
Everyone has their thang…
And still safer than Heroin.
I checked out the first episode. Haven’t finished it yet but seems interesting. I feel sorry for that medic from NJ. Mad seems to have a lot of demons.
This is for anyone not just Watrdawg, how are these guys going back and forth to Syria without getting on a list somewhere (DHS, DOS, etc.).
I had a colleague who was a PMC in IQ, once he tried to meet his wife in Mexico for their anniversary and got hemmed up for a spell in Israel at the airport trying to make a connecting flight. His beard, occupation, and travel history drew a reg flag.
