I’m thinking of trying out some HSGI Universal Rifle mag pouches. Who has them and what are your thoughts on quality and the functionality of the velcro plus fastex buckle arrangement?

I have a few of them (maybe 4). They are pretty decent and the retention system allows you to tighten the pouch as much as needed. My greatest complaint about them are the buckles. I think they get in the way if you run just the velcro (unless you cut them off).
The buckles are a concern, I would prefer to go with snap/velcro. These would be utilized more so for my right side pouches where security of the contents is the priority and utilized for tac loads. I have a couple bungee tops now and can also use the velcro only flapped ones now with the flap tucked.
I was also looking at the Emdom stuff which has the elastic band around the body. They also have the molle strip so a pistol pouch can be added on the side to lower the thickness.
I sell about a dozen per month (both single and double), and have yet to hear anyone complain about the buckles. If anything, they cut them off and go only with the Velcro.
I am personally not a fan of 3-mag pouches. I find that they are not comfortable, and present a snag hazard for most of my use. I have used them but with just two mags, but it isn’t nearly as clean as a purpose-built 2-mag pouch.
That being said, if I had to use a 3-mag pouch I would most likely go with the HSGI. I have owned a piece or two of their gear
, and I don’t think that anyone is producing a superior product (equal, yes, but not definitively better), other than personal preference in type. I would remove the buckles, as I don’t need to jump them.
This is based on my use and personal preference, YMMV.
In the military I used 3 mag pouches on my green gear, and 2-mag pouches on my urban stuff.
The buckle/velcro combo is more for jumping, diving, patrolling, spie rigging, and other things of that nature that require “extra retention”.
If you are not doing these things you will be bent over with a sore back- carrying a big ruck offsets carrying 4 triple-mag pouches on your chest.
The only good thing I can see about a triple mag pouch is the ability to carry 2 PMAGS without getting stuck.
I like that I can use them for AR and AK mags.
That’s why I’m looking hard at them, even for my FAL.
That’s also a good point.
NCP, If possible, could you post a pic of one of these with AK mags in it? One with one mag and one with 2.
I certainly appreciate it!

One thing to remember about these pouches is that they are tiered. You can get 2 AK mags to fit (1 tiered, 1 in the bottom of the pouch) but you will be working with a smaller amount of velcro. I typically just put both mags in the bottom portion and dont fool with the tier. Some pics follow:
